3:45 – 4:15 Visit the Bonnie McClain Perennial Garden at Riverwalk Marina maintained by
Augusta Council of Garden Clubs volunteers in cooperation with the Augusta Parks and
Recreation Department. Learn about the environmental impact of maintaining a garden in a
public space and challenges related to overhead railroad tracks, clean up of a chemical spill and
track repair from a truck that went off the bridge into the garden, and working with the
Savannah Riverkeeper and EPA at a post flood clean-up project after parts of the Riverwalk
flooded when dam floodgates were opened to prevent major flooding. Garden volunteers will
point out heritage plants and placement considerations related to shade, sun, slope, and public
traffic, and share comments from marina residents and the public about how the garden has
improved the environment.
