Nike Paragraph The Nike industry and the Industrial Revolution are similar in the way that they pay and treat workers. During the Industrial Revolution factory owners forced the workers to work for long periods of time being paid really low wages. For example, as the website http://firstindustrialrevolution.weebly.com/ quotes, “People worked fourteen to sixteen hours a day for six days a week. However, the majority were unskilled workers, who only received about $8-$10 dollars a week, working at approximately 10 cents an hour”. This quote displays how negatively the workers were treated during the Industrial Revolution because it shows that workers were working up to sixteen hours a day while being paid only 8-10$ a week. Something very similar to this is happening now inside the Indonesian Nike factory. During the Industrial Revolution workers were treated really unfairly, but, even in the Indonesian Nike factory today, people are treated very similarly. For example, as the video we watched in class states, “they are paid a dollar and twenty five a day after periods of work as long as 16 hours per day” (Nike video 7:35) This quote displays how the treatment of workers during the Industrial Revolution is similar as the treatment today in Nike factories; workers get paid very little even if they work for tremendous working hours every day. Therefore, the treatment of workers in the Nike factory and during the Industrial Revolution have very similar aspects, such as low salaries and extremely long working hours.
