American Weeks 5.2. - 4.3.2014 The City of Tampere is organizing American Weeks between 5 February and 4 March 2014. The event aims to introduce American culture and lifestyle, and to increase the interaction between the citizens of Tampere and the American community living here. Jo'Buddy (Jussi Raulamo) is a Jemma 2013 root music award-winning singer, guitarist, composer, producer, dj... He has gained reputation along the years with legendary bands such as One O ´Clock Humph (1985-98), Groovy Eyes (1993) figure head and as the guitarist of Tiny Tones (1998-). He has played thousands of live gigs alone as well as with several groups during his 30-year-long career. The characteristic singing and guitar playing can be heard in over 40 national and international record, including even few top-20 singles. Tue 4 March (at 13:00-17:00) - Mardi Gras Carnival Parade and Fest - Shrove Tuesday Picture: Niklas Pedersen We are celebrating the American Weeks and Shrove Tuesday (Laskiaistiistai) with a joyful Carnival Parade strolling from Amuri along Hämeenpuisto, all the way to Tallipiha - Stable Yards. The Carnival parade leaves from English Playschool at 2 pm (14:00). The students of Tampereen lyseon lukio high school will pick along some children of English Playschool and Finnish International School of Tampere (FISTA). The joyful carnival parade will stroll to Tallipiha - Stable Yards, where we are heating up marshmallows, making handicrafts, singing and playing. Mardi Gras is the French name for Shrove Tuesday (Laskiaistiistai). The literal translation to it would be "Fat Tuesday". Mardi Gras refers to an old tradition, when people used to eat a lot of greasy and heavy food and celebrate together before they started fasting. Everybody is welcome to join! Irma Seleman is a Malaysian singer-songwriter and arranger, whose production combines soul and r'n'b with her own roots, Malay music. Irma, raised in a small town near Kuala Lumpur, was awarded with a scholarship to Berklee College of Music (Boston, US), where she is working on her new album at the moment. Uulu introduces North-America with music in the workshops both days. American drum, songs, turtle shell- and buffalo horn rattles, eagle bone flutes and a gigantic dance drum have been and still partly are the supporting structure of the Native Americans. The importance of music is huge to this exploited yet fascinating people. In the Yah tah hey- workshops children get to try real instruments of the Native Americans, learn to sing a part of a song, dance and hear stories. Many stereotypes will be cleared as the children get to find out interesting real information. Who were the ones with feather headdresses and totems? Who was the one living in teepees? Sun 23 February, at 4 pm - Nirunaru Puppet Theatre: Edison's Magical Lamp Edison's magical lamp. Photo: Martti Martikainen Nirunaru Puppet Theatre at Children's Cultural Centre Rulla, Finlaysoninkuja 6. This is a story about creativity, inventions and the power of childlike wonder. The play is based on the childhood stories of the inventor of light bulb, Thomas Alva Edison. The playful and humorous play of Nirunaru takes the audience to the childhood of Tuomas Alvari. Tuomas is wondering questions like, why onion makes you cry and why yawning often spreads from one to another. How light is created? Can mommy answer? Will Tuomas find the answer? Come and find out! The play is directed by Oili Sadeoja. The length is 30minutes. The play is suited for over 3-year-old children. Free admission. The play is in Finnish.
