star tour
MARCH 20-25, 2012
Escorted by Sue Shuman, World Travel Center
DAY ONE - TUE, MAR 20
We'll depart Salina this afternoon for Wichita where we'll
overnight at the Best Western Airport Hotel.
DAY TWO - WED, MAR 21
(SB,D)
A sack breakfast is included this morning as our Delta flight
departs Wichita at 6:30 AM. With a change of planes in
Atlanta, we'll arrive Savannah around 1:25 PM. After checking
into our hotel, we'll enjoy an orientation driving tour of the
area including a sampling stop at the Byrd Cookie Company,
and a drive along River Street. We'll return to our hotel late
afternoon to give you time to unpack and freshen up. Then
it's just a short walk to one of Savannah's best restaurants,
The Olde Pink House, where we'll enjoy a delightful Welcome
Dinner.
DAY THREE - THUR, MARCH 22
(B,L,D)
Breakfast at our hotel is included. We'll then have time to
explore two areas: River Street, which is a shopper's delight
offering everything from crafts to clothing to souvenirs, and
City Market, boasting art galleries and boutiques. Nearby
shops include Paula Deen’s shop (next door to her restaurant)
and one of her favorite shops, Kitchens on the Square. Lunch
today will be in or near City Market. After lunch we'll head for
Bonaventure Cemetery to see Johnny Mercer's plot and the
statue of little Gracie. Savannah is world renowned for its
blooming azaleas under a canopy of massive live oaks and
the best place to enjoy Mother Nature's fabulous handiwork
is in Bonaventure Cemetery. We'll return to Savannah's
Johnson Square in time for a Welcome Reception featuring
homemade goodies and fellowship to kick off the 77th Annual
Tour of Homes & Gardens. Dinner tonight is included at Vic's
on the River.
DAY FOUR - FRI, MARCH 23
(B,S,D)
A full buffet breakfast is included daily at our hotel. But be sure
to save a little room as one of our main activities today will be
"Sampling Savannah’s Favorites” that begins at 11 AM. It's a
culinary experience of true "Southern Hospitality" with both
uptown and down home cooking! We'll be treated to an
DAY FOUR - FRI, MARCH 23 (continued) entertaining
presentation and sampling of favored delights of many of
Savannah's residents. This should suffice nicely for lunch
today. This afternoon we'll tour the Owens-Thomas House,
one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture
in America, and site of a beautiful English-inspired parterre
garden and an original carriage house -- which contains one
of the earliest intact urban slave quarters in the South. We’ll
also have time to visit the Telfair Academy, whose sculpture
collection is complemented by the “Bird Girl” statue, known
for its appearance on the dust jacket of “Midnight in the
Garden of Good and Evil.” Tonight we’ll enjoy a Southern
Buffet at Paula Deen's famous "The Lady & Sons Restaurant."
DAY FIVE - SAT, MAR 24
(B, L)
We'll leave our hotel at 9:30 AM to begin our Self-Guided
Walking Tour of Savannah's Homes and Gardens in one of
the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Our tour starts at 10 AM
and we have a 3-hour window to visit the homes and gardens
open for tours. Next we'll head to Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House
~ a truly local institution and a MUST when visiting Savannah.
The menu is traditional Southern fare in a unique Southern
atmosphere. After lunch, we'll walk next door to one of Paula
Deen's favorite shops ~ One Fish Two Fish. The remainder
of the afternoon is free to enjoy Savannah however you wish.
Dinner tonight is on your own. Tonight we'll enjoy the hit
musical “The Beat Goes On” at the historic Savannah Theatre.
DAY SIX - SUN, MAR 25
(B)
After breakfast at our hotel, the morning is free to sleep in,
or, if you wish, take advantage of Sue’s offer of chauffeur
services to and from worship service at the church of your
choice. We’ll check out of the hotel by noon and drive to
Tybee Island for a chance to grab a bite of lunch on our own,
see the lighthouse and dip our toes in the Atlantic Ocean
before heading off to the airport. Our Delta flight departs at
6:15 PM and, after a change of planes in Atlanta, we arrive
back in Wichita at 10:15 PM, bringing home with us a deeper
appreciation of Savannah, Georgia, one of America's most
beautiful cities.
