D E C E M B E R Autumn 2015 Primary Membership newsletter INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Apprentices & 2 Sports Coach Update Sports Coach Update 3 Update from 4 sports coaches Health update 5 It seems such a long time ago now that over 40 Primary PE Co-ordinators got together on 22nd September at Romford YMCA for the first Collective meeting of the year. Not only did we preview a new maths curriculum with Jon Smedley of “Maths of the Day” but we also managed to revisit the dance routines offered by 5-a-day Fitness! Since then we have launched the new Collective website – www.haveringsportscollective.org organised and run 9 primary competitions, supported 21 schools in the set up and running of C4L Sports Clubs, hosted module 2 of the Youth Sport Trust PE leaders training and delivered over 200 half days of support as part of our primary packages. As time progresses we will be using the website more frequently to communicate competition details, results, photos, news stories and a wealth of other pertinent information so that it becomes a first port of call for all our members. This first official newsletter has contributions from some of the delivery team to give a flavour of how we are fulfilling our membership offer to date. In addition to reading the articles we hope that you will take some time to navigate the website for further news stories, photos and downloadable documents. The Collective will continue to work with local partners to sustain the high profile of PE and School Sport in Havering and ensure that we contribute to encouraging healthy and active lifestyles for all. On that note we wish you all a very enjoyable festive season and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016. St. Edwards Primary – we assisted Chris Hall, the P.E. co-ordinator in coaching sportshall athletics to year 3/4/5/6 children and recorded results for their sports hall athletics sessions. Gidea Park Primary - we coached tag rugby skills to years 3 & 4 and then ran a tag rugby competition as part of the rugby world cup celebrations. Suttons Primary - we coached basketball skills to students in year 3 to year 6 allowing them to play a game at the end, which they very much appreciated. Update by Claire Elston I have been working with La Salette to develop netball for their NQT teachers and pupils in years 4 and 5. I have taught a series of lessons with the teachers present. This has developed both the students understanding and knowledge of the game as well as the members of staff. I have also taken students to La Salette to help to run their 5-a-day pentathlons. My pupils are in year 7 and have experienced the fitness sessions before so they were excited to be helping out with the younger children. The girls' covered each station and are used to set up the activities, organise the children and count for the younger pupils. I have also been working with Upminster Junior School and have delivered two gymnastics Insets. I was given an overview by the staff as to their areas of need and catered the sessions to the year groups and abilities of the students. The session was delivered to a year group of staff at a time and a handful of pupils from the school were used for demonstration purposes. The Inset was delivered in their school hall so that all demonstrations / examples / differentiation strategies could be done using their equipment and facilities. Next term I am planning on helping out at more 5-a-day fitness sessions, gymnastics Insets at other schools as well as play leader training for year 5 pupils. PAGE Update by Marion Tucker Sports Crew training Scott's Primary School This is an excellent initiative provided by the Collective. The Sports Crew are responsible to help run and organise Sports events at the school. Throughout the training the Sports Crew are taught how to plan, set up and collate sports results. This gives many opportunities for any youngster at Scott's to participate in school sport competitions without making any extra demands on the teaching staff. Working alongside the PE coordinator, the Sports Crew can help organise, publicise and run the House competitions that are provided at Scott's Primary throughout the year. The Sports Crew also learn how to collate results and input data on school computers. Shona Barrett's work for the Collective since September . I have found the midday training with students and middays very rewarding this year as they have worked together well, understanding their respective responsibilities. Each school has been left resource cards, plus work records and certificates for their students. Gymnastics training at Ardleigh Green Junior School and Mawney School I have delivered 3 half day sessions of gymnastics with year 5 classes on a rotation basis at Ardliegh Green school. The emphasis on the lessons was showing how to get the apparatus out safely and the students to benefit on sequence development. In addition, I taught some basic skills and showed some different warm up ideas for gymnastics. The feedback from staff and students was positive. James Oglethorpe School Training for indoor athletics and staff inset on sportshall athletics was well received. Update by Marion Tucker Update by Kerry Waller I have been teaching 4 week blocks of strength Gymnastics with Preschool and Reception Gymnastics groups at Hylands School and Dame Tipping School. I have delivered a 5 week curriculum Gymnastics block of lessons to year 2 and year 5 classes at St Josephs school. I have also assisted with interviews for the appointment of a sports coach and delivered inset for Teachers on the safe use of Gymnastics apparatus, both at Harold Court School. Playleader training at Harold Wood Primary School At Harold Wood Primary School any pupil can apply to become a Playleader. They have a good understanding as to what the role entails. If any pupil feels that they have the qualities to work along side the younger pupils at lunchtime, they are encouraged to put themselves forward to attend the training provided by the Collective. The training is both directive and informative, with ample time given to the Playleaders to explore and use their own ideas. The training also encourages confidence as an individual as well as finding out the importance of working within a Team. The Harold Wood Playleaders were an excellent example of the scheme. All the children worked very hard and were very much looking forward to starting their role in Leadership. Well done to all the Playleaders at Harold Wood. Health update by Sharon Adkins PAGE I’m Sharon Adkins, the team Nutritionist and I am responsible for supporting schools in the South of the borough with their Change4Life Sports Clubs and can offer healthy lifestyle advice. Using the excellent resources schools already have – teaching staff, support staff and a safe space to play – we encourage use of Change4Life resources to maximise fun & enjoyment for the least active or any other targeted group of children in years 3 & 4. Schools can use the themed activity bags for games ideas, the activity wristbands to encourage small steps towards their activity goals and the Log Books to help record all of their achievements. In addition we offer training for Change4life champions — Young Leaders can get involved and take responsibility for the Clubs – they inspire and encourage their younger peers to great effect. In fact, at Whybridge Junior School the Young Leaders also run P.E lessons and meet once a week to plan and discuss ideas in advance – a real success story! Schools can book rewards sessions – we are lucky to have Chelsea Foundation FC on board to offer fun skills and play sessions plus our very own Lauren Mack, dance-teacher and owner of Twist n’Pout who offers a fun interactive session with lots of dance moves and laughs. Health Day at St.Peter’s Update by Debbie Bailey Wykeham School have recently joined the Havering Sports Collective and wasted no time in setting up a Change 4 Life Sports Club. Lee Hughes a member of the PE staff had previously been involved in the C4L programme in Barking and Dagenham and was keen to get something set up. 8 children were identified as suitable and Lee has spent lunchtimes with these children, not just running physical activity sessions with them but also talking to them about the importance of physical activity and healthy food choices. 8 selected children have been trained as C4L Champions and are now running lunchtime games/physical activity sessions in the playground for any children who want to join in. St.Peter’s opted for a class by class Health Day. Each of the 8 classes had fun learning about portion sizes, using grapes and comparing hand sizes…. After discussing a healthy balance using the ‘eatwell plate’, in small groups they guessed the amount of sugar in some everyday items before helping to chop and prepare fruit for making smoothies on the bike. The younger classes shouted encouragement to their teachers (and Headteacher) who pedalled to blend their smoothies! The older years had a turn each, relay style! 5
