The difference between “I have a Dream” and “Glory and Hope” Thouria Mahmoud “I Have a Dream” Kind uses repetitive words and phrases, refers to the document of Emancipation Proclamation and uses lyrics from songs and anthems King has a dream that he is promoting and that he wants to make reality Similar “Glory and Hope” Mandela made emotional connections between the citizens of South Africa and their land Mandela says the dream is already here Both are highlighting injustices and they wanted people to see The occasion of King’s speech was the “March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom” The occasion of the speech was Mandela’s inauguration as the first democratically elected president and as the first black South African president The purpose of Madela’s speech was to celebrate the current achievement of having pure democratic elections and vanishing discrimination. At the same time though, Mandela foresees future difficulties like poverty and insufficient jobs for the citizens, and he asks the people of South Africa to work together and make sure the worst doesn’t happen. Nelson Mandela delivered his speech in South Africa where he was just elected president The purpose of King’s speech was to call for a non-violent fight against racial injustice, segregation and discrimination Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his speech in Washington D.C. since the federal government is located there King’s audience were mostly African American who are negatively affected by racial segregation and some white supporter for that cause King gave this speech as a political activist not having any authority King and his people still have not witnessed antidiscrimination at the time and King asks his people not to forget the unfair treatment so they can be provoked to act with creativity against racial injustice They both reminded their people the long road of suffering they faced because of discrimination Mandela’s audience was an international one including leaders from other countries and the multiracial South African population Mandela gave this speech as a president who has authority Mandela and his people witnessed the birth of an antidiscriminated country and Mandela asks his people to forget those miseries and to forgive the white minorities for them
