Alliteration
What is Alliteration?
Alliteration is using several words together in a sentence which all have the same
sounds.
Example: Sing a Song of Sixpence, as you can see the letter S has been used three
times in the same line.
Alliteration is used in tongue twisters, short poems and very often when writing a
descriptive piece.
Here are some further examples:
Pretty Petunia practised painting prunes
Charlie can�t count correctly
Tony traced Tabby to a tiny tent
Parsnips or pilchards or picking peas
Albert ate eighteen apples
Donna the Dalmatian darted down to Devon
Sonia sang sweetly
The wild and woolly west
The trees tilted tenderly towards

If you listen to some TV advertisements you will notice that alliteration is used
quite frequently. Can you think of any?
Some authors use alliteration when trying to make part of a story more exciting.
Example 1
Bingo ran over to get the ball. It sounds pretty dull, but if alliteration is used.
Example 2
Bright and bushy tailed Bingo bounded briskly towards the bouncing ball.
You can actually imagine Bingo bounding over to retrieve the ball.
