TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH
THE LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church! We are so glad that you are here. We hope that joining us
for worship today will nurture your heart and transform your mind. Here at First Pres our mission is
transforming lives through the love of Jesus Christ, that simple and that challenging. We realize we need
each other and commit to pray for each other. We reach out in love and compassion to a world in need, and
we know we are a work in progress.
If you are new to First Pres, we hope you will join us again and consider attending any of our
mission, fellowship and education opportunities. If you would like to learn more about us, please fill
out the visitor information on the “rose card” in the pew rack, and place it in the offering plate. You are
also more than welcome to contact any of our pastors over the phone or by email. God's peace to
you today.

setting by Robert A. Hobby

arr. Kevin McChesney
arr. Douglas Wagner
arr. Dan R. Edwards
As the Prelude begins, we invite you into a period of quiet reflection as we begin our preparation for worship.
TOLLING OF THE HOUR
†CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 100)
One: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
All: Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.
One: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his.
All: We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
One: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.
All: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
†HYMN No. 248 Christ is Risen! Shout Hosanna!
HYMN TO JOY
CALL TO CONFESSION
One: On this fourth Sunday of Easter, we listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd. We refuse to listen to
the hireling and the wolf. We quiet the inner voices of shame and pride and despair. The Good
Shepherd is here to meet us, to protect us and bless us, to forgive us and empower us. Let us together
confess our sin to our Good Shepherd.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
All: Gentle Shepherd, you guide us in right paths, you lead us in the ways of righteousness, but we
have allowed our anger, our fear, our greed and our cynicism to direct our paths. We have
overreacted, we have taken more than our share, we have despised others that seem to have it
all. Forgive us, God, for charting our own course. Forgive us for not remembering that we are
your sheep, and you are our Shepherd. Forgive us when we have not listened for your voice.
Lead us back to your path, to loving you and loving our neighbors. Help us to unclench our
fists and lend out our hands in hope and healing, forgiveness and love. In the name of Christ
our Shepherd we pray. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
One: The Good Shepherd knows his sheep, even lays down his life for them. We are part of his flock. We
are part of Christ’s body. In Christ we find wholeness and restoration. This is the good news of the
gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
All: Thanks be to God! Amen.
†GLORIA PATRI No. 581 Glory Be to the Father
Henry W. Greatorex
All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is
now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
†PASSING OF THE PEACE
One: The peace of Christ be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: As we gather, we remember we are God’s beloved children. Let us greet each other in the peace of
Christ while saying, “God loves you!”
WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please sign and pass the friendship pad to those in your pew.)

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed)
All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his
only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in
the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
ANTHEM 11:00am The Lord is My Shepherd *
Robert Nance
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in pastures green;
He leadeth me beside the waters still; He restoreth my soul.
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death Iwill fear no evil.
For Thou art with me, Thy Rod and Staff they comfort me.
Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
Goodness and mercy shall follow me all my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as
we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
One: This is the Word of the Lord.

†CHARGE AND BLESSING
†CHORAL RESPONSE Go in the Grace of the Lord
Mark Barnard
Go in the grace of the Lord. Walk in the way of His word.
Stand in the strength of His promises, and believe in your heart they are true.
Sit at the feet of the Savior. Pray in the power of the Spirit.
Rise and run the race with patience, and go in the grace of the Lord.
Go in hope, God’s hope. Go in peace, God’s peace.
Go in joy, everlasting joy as you live in the fullness of His love.
Go in the grace of the Lord.
†POSTLUDE Good Christian Friends Rejoice and Sing
setting by John Leavitt
*Anthem note: This morning’s anthem is Robert Nance’s setting of “The Lord is My Shepherd.” Bob was Director
of Music here at First Presbyterian Church from 1990 until 1999. Currently, Bob is the Director of Music at
Plymouth Congregational Church and the President and Artistic Director of the Heartland Chamber Chorale. For
this anthem, Bob used the text for Psalm 23 that is found in the King James Version. It was written in 1995 and
dedicated to William J. Moody. Rev. Moody was a Parish Associate here at First Pres from 1967 to 1970, and was
Interim and Associate Pastor from 1990-1993. From 1970-1990 he helped found Wellspring and served as its
director.

vegetables from a garden here at FPC. The Day School has graciously agreed to help care for the
garden. We are going to use Grow Boxes ($29.95 each) for this project and are asking members of
the congregation to sponsor and/or care for additional boxes, beyond what we are currently
planning. If you would like to get involved or have questions, please contact Beth Marks at
(260)312-7555 or [email protected]. More information about Grow Boxes can be found on
the internet at www.agardenpatch.com.

made, and several of those military personnel have returned home. If you
would like to have a package sent to any military personnel, please contact
Kathy Adair at (260) 672-9155 or [email protected] with the
correct military address so that we can send a package and let our troops know that we are praying
for them.

{FEATURED EVENT}
Write - A - Will Day
Monday, May 4
3:30pm- 7:00pm

WHY DO I NEED A WILL?
You can ensure that your assets go to
the beneficiaries you desire rather
than depending on a court to decide
for you.

The existence of a will speeds up the
process considerably, allowing your
beneficiaries to get the assets sooner.

The existence of a will reduces the
chance of family disputes over
property.

In addition to specifying who you
want your assets to go to, you can
also let your beneficiaries know how
you would like for them to use those
assets.

You can also use a will to designate
who will be the guardian of your
minor children rather than depending
on a court to decide for you.

You can include provisions for heirs
with special needs.
Thought about writing a will but not sure
where to start? Who to call?
How much it will cost?
If so, we have a great opportunity for you.
Please join Church member Stephen
Adair, an attorney with Beers Maller
Backs & Salin, who will assist FPC
members in making a simple will or
codicil to an existing will on Monday,
May 4. He is volunteering his services
FREE of charge providing it is a simple
will or document containing a bequest
(gift in any amount) to First Presbyterian
Church or any other charity.
Private consultations will be held at the
church between 3:30 - 7:00pm. During
the consult, you will fill out a Simple Will
Questionnaire, meet with Steve, and then
schedule an appointment with his office at
a later date to sign the finalized
documents.
If more complete estate planning is
required, an appointment can be scheduled directly with his office where a mutually agreed upon fee may apply.
Please call the church Financial Office, 426-7421 Ext 116 or 111,
in advance to secure a 30-minute appointment.
