Cross curricular homework: World War I & II YEAR 6 Over the next few weeks, we will be studying WW1 and WW2. For each week’s homework, you will need to choose a minimum of one activity within that row. The homework will need to be in on Monday. (Try to push yourself to do some of the choices on the right hand side). Your homework must not be rushed, untidy, printed straight off the internet, or you will be asked to re-do it. We want quality work, please!!! Different skills Week 1 WW1 Bloom’s Taxonomy: Six Thinking Levels Knowing Analysing Creating Evaluating Research some weapons used during WW1 and describe their effectiveness or their issues e.g. early tanks. Create a model of a trench or no-man’s land in WW1. Find a poem about WW1. Produce an annotated version of it which explores its imagery and poetic techniques used. Write a paragraph explaining why you think it is effective. Draw a map to show the beaches the Allies used for D-Day. Which beaches were the most successful. Show how you would add this money. Produce a chart to show numbers rescued from Dunkirk. Explain the significance of these numbers. Justify the loss of life of the Allies, both military and civilian, in order to defeat Hitler. Find and make a recipe from WW2. How does it compare to a modern recipe? Study the aircraft involved in the Battle of Britain and produce a mural. Find out about the importance of Bletchley Park in WW2. Create a code for the rest of the class to break. Make a model of an Anderson or Morrison shelter. Week 5 Literacy Prepare a glossary of words connected with WW2. Write and perform a radio broadcast for housewives to help them cope with wartime shortages. Imagine you are an evacuee. Write your first letter home explaining your feelings about your situation. Write a poem about the Blitz using similes and alliteration. Read a poem about WW2 . Read part or all of it to the class and explain its meaning. Week 6 History Make a timeline of the key events of WW2. Demonstrate in your own style what the Phoney War was. What is Remembrance Day and explain why it is important we continue to have this special day? As an evacuee write a diary of a week in your life and explore your feelings. Investigate and prepare a report on the Battle of Britain for an encyclopedia. Week 3 Mathematical Week 4 Art Present a piece of work which explains why the poppy is used as a symbol of WW1 on Remembrance Day. Applying Look at the statistics of those who were injured and/or killed for each country on the Allied side. Present this data as a chart of your choice. Week 2 Geography Write a simple explanation of why WW1 began and present in an interesting way. Make a list of the countries involved with the Axis and Allied powers. Understanding Listen to Neville Chamberlain’s speech (Woodlands site). Write about how you think this must have made people feel as they listened at home. Explain the main beliefs of Hitler and the Nazi party. Choose a painting about WW2 and evaluate its effect. Week 7 Important people. List the main leaders during WW2 both here and in other countries. Find out if any relatives or friends have had experiences from WW2. Choose 5 famous people from WW2 and rank them in order of importance. Give reasons for your choices. Research the role of women in the war. Was their role important? How do you think these new roles made women feel? Produce a presentation about a famous person in WW2. Compare and contrast two leaders from WW2, one from the Allies and one from the Axis powers.
