The thought of moving from the highly supported and structured environment of school to the world of adulthood is stressful and scary for parents. Parents aren’t the only ones who worry about the next stage of life. Transition to adulthood is a key stressor for young people with autism as well. The crisp fall air brings an abundance of ripe apples and offers an ideal opportunity to practice useful life skills, all while having fun. During this six week session, participants will learn about the various health effects, uses for and ways of cooking with apples. Pine Tree Society’s Transition Program helps teens and young adults with autism build the skills they need for a successful future. Through a variety of fun, social activities outside of the school environment, participants have an opportunity to: • Connect with peers who share similar challenges • Discover new abilities in center and community-based settings • Explore vocational interests through workplace visits and community service • Express emotion and develop skills that promote a healthy mind, body and spirit September 20 - October 25, 2016 Tuesdays, 3 to 5 p.m. Participants will: • Research apple recipes • Discuss and practice kitchen safety • Practice following directions • Develop social skills and practice teamwork • Meet new friends in a supportive environment • Experience the FUN of apple picking (the group will take a trip to a local apple orchard)! Join this session for facilitated discussions and structured small group activities and explore and uncover skills and talents that you will use as you become an independent adult. How Canning Preserves Foods November 8 to December 13, 2016 Tuesdays, 3 - 5 pm Almost everyone enjoys eating delicious jams and jellies but not many people know how it is done. In this Autism Transition Skill Builder session, we will learn all about canning. What is canning and preserving? Why is it beneficial? How is it done? Participants will: Building skills while having fun in a supportive environment The Autism Transition Program is offered through Transition Skill Builder sessions. Each session has a different theme. Based on personal preferences, participants may choose to attend one session - or all. During the school year, Skill Builders meet each Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. for a six week period. Over the summer, one week-long Skill Builder will be offered. • Explore how to get started in canning and preserving fruits and berries • Learn to create personalized packaging for gifts or sales • Practice following directions • Develop social skills and practice teamwork • Meet new friends in a supportive environment • Learn and practice marketing skills to promote product The session will culminate in our own Canning Craft Sale! We will sell our jams and jellies for the holidays and experience the satisfaction of creating a marketable product.
