COMBINED VILLAGES EVENTS
NOTE: Information not directly related to events in our 4 villages is in a separate
section: “OTHER INFORMATION / EVENTS ELSEWHERE”
FLICKS IN THE STICKS AT GORSLEY VILLAGE HALL
Thursday 18th December 7.30 p.m. – ‘Saving Mr Banks’ (cert. PG)
The extraordinary and untold story of how Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) eventually
persuaded P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson), the author of the book Mary Poppins,
to adapt it for the big screen. Very well received at other Flicks venues: “A great Flicks
film - plenty of depth, thoroughly entertaining and wonderful acting.”
The running time of this film is 2 hours, so there will be no interval.
Thursday 15th January 7.30 p.m. – ‘Calvary’ (cert. 15)
A darkly comic thriller featuring the wonderful Brendan Gleeson in a career best,
heart-and-soul performance as Father James, a good priest who has been told he
has a week to live. As the death threat was delivered at confession, he doesn’t know
who it was, and can’t go to the police. So he opts to try to understand his small
minded, frankly bonkers parishioners, in the hope of dissuading the killer.
The running time of this film is 1 hour 42 minutes, so there will be no interval.
Admission (at the door): Adults £4.50, Children (under 18) £2.50. Reservations
cannot be taken but discounted tickets (Adults £4, Children £2) can be purchased in
advance from Gorsley Post Office & Stores or Tony Beckwith, 01989 720358 or
[email protected]
As usual, tea, coffee and biscuits will be available and you are welcome to bring your
own drinks (glasses provided). The doors will be open from 7.00 for those that would
like to meet up with friends and have a drink and chat before the film.
COBALT UNIT APPEAL FUND CHRISTMAS CARDS
Christmas cards and all Greetings cards are available from Aston
Ingham, Linton and Upton Bishop W.I.s, from Linton Post Office (open all day
on Tuesdays and Thursdays) as well as Burton Farm, Linton.
CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR RECYCLING
Please may I remind friends who intend to donate their used Christmas Cards for the
volunteers in Cheltenham to make into next year’s Christmas Cards to avoid using
sellotape or drawing pins where it will deface the picture. Blu-tack is a safer
alternative. I shall be pleased if I can have the used Christmas Cards by Saturday,
10 January 2015 as they have to be delivered to Cheltenham the following week for
sorting and storing ready for use. They may be left at any of the sales outlets as
above.
My thanks in advance – Jane Vines

ST. MICHAEL’S HOSPICE
Can you help St Michael's Hospice make 2015 our best Open Gardens
summer to date?
In 2014, gardeners from Herefordshire and beyond used their horticultural creativity to support St Michael’s Hospice by opening their gardens.
Visitors enjoyed the delights of 32 unique gardens, including private gardens not
normally open to the public such as the Newport House estate. Stoke Prior and
Wellington Heath also held village-wide Open Garden events. In total, an astonishing £24,000 was raised by our green-fingered supporters.
Opening your garden for St Michael’s Hospice can be a very rewarding experience, for you and the people who visit. If you have a garden that delights people,
please think about opening it forSt Michael’s Hospice. It doesn’t have to be
elaborate: as long as your garden is interesting and has character, we would love
to hear from you. We will give you all the help and guidance needed to offer visitors
the chance to share and enjoy your love of gardening.
It’s up to you when you would like to open your garden. Perhaps you’d like to join
with neighbors and hold a village Open Garden day? The choice is yours.
If you are interested in finding out more, please call the Community Fundraising
Team at St Michael’s Hospice on 01432 851000.
Please support St Michael’s Hospice and help make 2015 a summer of gardening
delights.

MINUTES OF OCTOBER MEETING were read, approved and signed, with three
amendments.

inadequate, between the Village Hall and The Old Rectory and jetted
piping into the Ell Brook was to be installed. All culverts needed to be
cleared and the problems at Oaks Lane were to be investigated. Crews
Hill drains to be cleared. Action item 1 – Clerk to forward correspondence
with Mr Stallard regarding run-off from fields to Mr Williams.
2) Signage – Mr Wallace’s email regarding Aston Crews road markings to be
sourced (Action item 2) and sent to Mr Williams. Corner at Aston Crews
(C1281/B4222) to be hatched & signage to be updated.

4) HGV signage – item to be placed on agenda for December

for comment. Aston Ingham has 3.8 km of ‘C’ roads and 13.2 km of U/C roads.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Clerk had notified Monitoring Officer of adoption of Code of Conduct and requested that any necessary forms be forwarded.
STANDING ORDERS
Councillors had viewed Model Standing Orders. Mr Whatley proposed that a copy
be purchased from H.A.L.C., Mr Harding seconded. All in favour. Clerk to request
copy. (Action Item 4)
PARISH PLAN
Details for Tuesday’s meeting were finalised.

Mr Tormey gave a resume of the Blue Light information evening that he and Mr
Whatley had attended. The Community Speedwatch programme was discussed.
14
PLANNING
1) Clerk to contact Enforcement Officer to ask whether planning permission
had been granted for the installation of a mobile home and septic tank on
Babylon Farm. (Action Item 5)
2) It was agreed that payment of the annual land easement rent for the Village
Hall septic tank would be transferred to the Village Hall Management
Committee, but that the committee would be welcome to apply for grant
funding from the Parish Council for suitable projects.

NIGEL VAN DYKE. One has time to think and observe after major surgery; even
before surgery the situation provides many hours to reflect. One of my earlier
visitors during my stay in Hereford before my operation up in Stafford University
Hospital was Nigel. I asked him how things were in Linton. Pause, ‘not much’,
another pause, ‘Oh yes Ken Downham has gone into hospital. That for me sums up
Nigel’s dry sense of humour, not always easy to detect, but often apparent,
particularly on the golf course. He is a decent golfer having played with him on
several occasions in the early days. He probably won more than he lost .Sadly he
is about to leave us and for good reasons I’m sure. His contribution, along with his
dear late wife Salli has been considerable. He always supported, most often, what
goes on in the village and in particular supporting Salli during her time as priest
amongst us. We all wish him well in his new home and look forward to occasional
visits, especially enjoying a pint in the Alma some Sunday lunch times.
Ken Downham.
Ken Downham
Ken along with Pam would like to thank wholeheartedly all those kind souls who
visited me whilst in hospital, sent cards,, made phone calls and provided lifts to
16
wherever. Imagine my immense pleasure and surprise to find John Foley sitting at
my bedside up in Stafford, having travelled by train from Hereford. He had one or
two problems on the way; when you next see him in the Alma buy him a pint and
he will tell you all about it. His story is certainly worthy of a pint ! Most of all, my
eternal thanks to Jeremy, my son and his wife Debbie who have done so much to
make my convalescence so comfortable and taking on all the administrative details
with regards to Pam’s temporary stay at Hill Ash Care home close to their house.
Home for Piano?
At home we have a piano that has been in the family for 3 generations, but
unfortunately it seldom gets played. However, I really don't want to sell it.
We would be very happy if a local family would like it on long term loan, and we
would be happy to arrange delivery.
It is in good condition, and almost in tune.
If you are interested please call Mark Davies on 01989 720 744

which we share with children, families, grandparents and friends.. Plenty of room

Christmas Day
The Christmas service this year will be Midnight Communion Service at 11:30pm
on Christmas Eve. There will be no other service in Linton on Christmas Day.
Sunday Club
Jo Davies and Julia Thomas were presented with gifts at the final Sunday Club
gathering on 16th November in gratitude for all they have done for the young people
over the years. They have put a great deal of time and energy into making the
Sunday Club so special and this has been much appreciated by the children and
by the congregation. Although the Club itself is now ending as a club there will still
be a service for children and families every month, which will be at 11.15 on the 4th
Sunday of the month – and they will continue to be playing a role for us all at the
enormously successful Crib service on Christmas Eve. Thank you so much to Jo
and Julia for your great contribution.
The Churchyard Wall appeal
Thanks to everyone who has supported the appeal to raise money for the rebuilding
of the Churchyard wall. Following the fascinating talk from Archie Miles on “The
Oak Tree” the total now stands at £5,995 with the Quiz still to come at time of
writing! This is truly amazing! Huge thanks to everyone who has helped raise this
amount, and, we hope that everyone has also enjoyed the various events
Linton Churchyard
The final two organised churchyard maintenance sessions of 2014 took place on
October Saturday mornings. Many thanks to all who helped on one or both of these
occasions. It is especially good that Osian Tyler and Tom Sutton have been doing
useful work clearing branches from overgrown trees, removing leaves and mowing.
However, work goes on throughout most of the year in an endeavour to maintain
our churchyard in a state such that it is an asset to the village. Both the church and
churchyard are freely open to all, whether as places for quiet contemplation, or as
venues for weddings, baptisms or funerals/burials.
Anyone who is able to help with maintenance tasks during 2015 will be most
welcome – just an occasional couple of hours would help spread the load. If you
feel able to help please contact Roger Barnes (01989 750900). Thank you.

Church, Linton where you can leave non-perishable items (please check that they
are still in date.) and they will be delivered to the food bank in Ross on your behalf.

The Organ Fund now stands at £15,758. John Boyd is continuing with approaches
to charitable bodies but we may have to raise the remaining £8,000 or so by our
own efforts. So far we've done extremely well. What we need is a few more
events so if you feel you could contribute during the coming year with a Coffee
Morning or some similar event, why not commit yourself by signing up on the board
in the church or talk to a member of the PCC about it? Keep up the good work, our
goal is in sight!
It has been another busy year: we have made great progress with the Organ Fund,
the churchyard is looking better than for a long time, thanks to great work by the
new team. We have had a number of successful events, the highlights being the
Dog Show in July and the commemorative exhibition in the church comparing life
in Upton Bishop in 1914 and in 2014. Many of our friends have also been
enormously supportive. In particular the Moody Cow has contributed most generously (who can forget our landlord, Chris’s heroic bike ride?) and Jane Ayres’
Cardiff Half Marathon (run in spite of painful injuries) boosted the organ fund. The
PCC owes a great big thank you to Chris, Jane and the many others who have in
so many ways been a part of 2014’s success.
On behalf of the Upton Bishop PCC the churchwardens would like to wish everyone
in the village, and the friends of the church who live elsewhere, a very happy
Christmas and a peaceful 2015.
Prayer Group meeting is on Wednesday 3rd December and on 14th January in
the Church at 2 p.m. Everyone welcome. The green ‘Pray for’ cards can be found
on the church Sales Table or by contacting Brenda on 750425 or Linda on 780226.
Your confidence will be respected.
Evensong is said in the church every Friday evening at 5.30pm. This is a short
spoken service and gives a calming pause between the week and the weekend.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
COMMUNITY LARDER – Christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat,
please put a carton in the basket at the back. If you haven’t got a carton, a tin or
two will do, and if you give a ‘pie or pudding, then God bless you (and all the people
who receive them). Happy Christmas
BEST WISHES to everyone who is not feeling too well at present or in hospital
recovering from operations.

RECTOR’S LETTER
33
Dear friends,
I am writing the day after returning from General Synod, and so it
seems only reasonable to report what you already know, that exactly two
years on from the disappointment of November 2012, we were able to wave
our hands in the air to approve the final procedural motion that enables
women to become bishops in the Church of England. Maybe by the time
you read this the first appointment will have been announced? What struck
me in the highly formal language of the Canon as read out by the Registrar,
and on display afterwards, was that it was done in The Queen’s name, and
with the Great Seal of the Realm attached. It was a salutary reminder that
we are called to be the Church for all the people of England, and I hope this
change will be a renewal of that.
It will not make an immediate difference here, of course, because we
have a new bishop already, Richard Frith, and although he is not installed
until Saturday, he was at Synod as our bishop and took the Hereford
members out to dinner (a custom we all made sure he inherited from
Anthony!) He was good company, noted how he is making rapid adjustment
from Hull (for instance in the ‘colour’ of the MPs), and knows what we think
about all sorts of issues. But I think he has the wisdom to take it all with a
pinch of salt! I hope we shall soon be able to arrange a visit to our parishes
for him.
In the meantime, of course, Christmas approaches and as ever I
look forward to seeing many of you at the Carol, Crib, and other services,
which are advertised elsewhere in the magazine. Christmas I realise has
many elements for people across our parishes and beyond; holiday, food
and drink, family, presents, decorations and general festivity to lift the winter
dark. But it would not be there at all were it not for the event itself; the
coming of God into human life as a little child, the world’s Redeemer laid in
the manger. For that alone it is worth coming to sing a few carols. And if
you will think about it more, worth all the world he came to save.
Neil
