Go Explore Georgia! WebQuest for Fifth Grade Students Science and Writing Project Designed by Jennifer Austin & Dr. Mary Murphy Demorest Elementary School The Georgia Coast (http://www.exploregeorgia.org/) Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Introduction Georgia on my Mind http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=49762 You have studied landforms and how constructive or destructive processes create them. We know about major landforms such as continents, ocean basins, plains, plateaus, and mountain ranges. In addition, we have learned about minor land features such as hills, valleys, slopes, drumlins, and dunes. These landforms are what make up the surface of the earth. Create a tree map of the different types of landforms found in Georgia. The following is a list of landforms found in Georgia: Stone Mountain Emerson Fault Tallulah Falls Providence Canyon Appalachian Mountains Soapstone Ridge Fall Line Lime Sinks Okefenokee Swamp Pine Mountain Altamaha River system Barrier islands Amicalola Falls Cohutta Mountains Beaches Brasstown Bald Brevard fault zone Cumberland Plateau Lookout Mountain Blue Ridge Mountains Chattahoochee River The Task Georgia Landforms Culminating Project Menu Directions: Select a project of your choice as a means of demonstrating mastery of the unit objectives. You will have several days in class to work on your project. You may choose to work alone or with a partner. Be prepared to explain and share your project with the class. Your mode of presentation is up to you. Please be mindful to justify how you have met the standards for our unit on Landforms. Persuasive Informational Narrative Brochure PowerPoint Realistic Fiction (Design a brochure to convince others to visit your chosen landform.) (Create a PowerPoint to inform others of the landforms in Georgia.) (Write a story about a visit to a Georgia landform. Include a few relevant facts. ) Advertisement Video Documentary Scrapbook (Develop an advertisement for a travel magazine to lure tourists to your selected landform.) (Produce a video documentary of Georgia landforms.) (Create a scrapbook of your adventures while visiting Georgia landforms.) Travel Journal Game Comic Book (Make a diary to record your visit to Georgia landforms.) (Construct a game to explain the landforms in Georgia and the processes by which they were formed.) (Design a comic book with the “Weather Agents”, “Erosion Agents”, or landform-‐related characters.) Song/Rap Song Oral Story (Write a song/rap to persuade others to visit Georgia landforms.) (Write a song to explain the different landforms and how they were created.) (Invent a legend for a landform to be passed down orally.) Our standards: S5E1: Students will identify surface features of the Earth caused by constructive and destructive processes. ELA-W.5.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. ELA-W.5.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. ELA-W.5.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. The Process ( Step by step process to help you succeed!) Read through the complete process before you begin. Step 1: Review constructive and destructive earth processes. Complete a double bubble map of the two processes: 1. Turn a sheet of paper to landscape position 2. Draw two circles in the center: Constructive Destructive Process Process 3. List what the two processes have in common in the center bubbles. 4. List what is specific to each process on the appropriate sides. 5. Draw your frame of reference. Include how you know this information and why it is important. Step 2: You may do a Google or Bing search or use the following websites to decide which landform you will research. https://sites.google.com/site/landformsvirtualfieldtrip/ http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Home.jsp *****New Georgia Encyclopedia – Land and resources; use search box to left http://ngeorgia.com/naturally/ *****GREAT SITE!!! Scroll down to North Georgia, naturally, for a lot in info on the formation of our land http://home.att.net/~cochrans/geomap01.htm Geologic map of Georgia - You will be able to click on feature areas of the map to read articles. You will find information on Brasstown Bald, Tallulah Falls, Brevard Fault Zone, Stone Mountain, Soapstone Ridge, Fall Line, Okefenokee Swamp, Trail Ridge, and Altamaha River. http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/namerica/usstates/galand.htm Click on Landforms – list some specifically, links go to larger view of map; not a lot of info http://www.uga.edu/gardenclub/m2s/index.html UGA Garden Club site listing different areas. Most useful info is in the brown sidebar to the left. http://dromus.nhm.uga.edu/~GMNH/gawildlife/index.php?page=information/regions Gives more detailed information about the basic landform regions of GA, area where located http://www.netstate.com/states/geography/ga_geography.htm Basic info on regions http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/geograph.htm Georgia Geography site from UGA http://www.wacona.com/okefenokee/okefenokee.html Good info on Okefenokee Swamp http://coastgis.marsci.uga.edu/summit/k12studenhome.htm Good info on Altamaha River watershed http://www.nerrs.noaa.gov/SapeloIsland/ http://www.sherpaguides.com/georgia/coast/central_coast/sapelo_island.html http://www.sapeloisland.org Step 3: Use the research form to gather information: Go Explore Georgia! Research Form Georgia Landform: Location of Georgia Landform: My landform was created by ________________________________(constructive/destructive) processes. Explain how you determined this. Some interesting facts that make my landform unique: 1. 2. 3. 4. Role of Human Intervention on my landform: Step 4: (prewriting) 1. Create a circle map of your landform. Brainstorm ideas about your project. Step 5 (more prewriting) This is where you will have to push your brain. First imagine that you have taken a trip to your landform. Have you gotten a great mental picture? Great! Complete a tree map using the five senses. List words for each of the five senses that will describe your special place. You will use these words in the project you have chosen. Here is an example to get you started. (Remember to turn your paper to landscape and draw your frame of reference.) Five Senses Sight Hearing Ι Touch Smell Taste __ (Push your brain to come up with sensory words to describe the landform. This will improve your writing tremendously!) Step 6 You have collected your data and you have completed prewriting activities. Now it is time to make a rough draft of your project. Confer with your teachers and peers during this process for constructive feedback. Step 7 Now you are ready to complete your project. Create a neatly written/organized piece. Remember how you present your work is important! http://www.wacona.com/promote/galandforms/index.ht m Evaluation: Georgia Landforms Culminating Project Rubric 3 (I totally rock at landforms!)
