Meet the walking team The team also carry out research and monitoring with a view to focusing funding intelligently. Schemes are monitored to identify expected results and research commissioned to recognise and better inform future priorities. The team also funds the Strategic Walk Network through Walk London, six routes that cover London and which is scheduled for completion by 2012. The team are always happy to deal with questions, provide input and technical advice for schemes and to identify areas where the team can work with all interested parties to deliver an improved pedestrian environment for London. MAYOR OF LONDON Transport for London Transport for London’s ‘Walking and Accessibility’ team is working to improve the pedestrian environment for all users. The team form a part of Cycling, Walking and Accessibility (CWA) within Surface Transport’s new Walking, Cycling & Local Delivery directorate. The team’s vision is to make London walking friendly. This vision encapsulates the desire to make walking the first choice for short journeys and to increase the number of longer journeys made on foot. We are a small team but our work is extensive across six main areas: • Walking and accessibility on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN). • Walking on Borough roads. • Consultation and development control work. • Legible London delivery. • Promotion. • Research and auditing. Funded through the Local Implementation Plan process, the programme is focused on delivering Key Walking Routes and all types of new pedestrian infrastructure on Borough roads as well as the Strategic Walk Network. Schemes include improvements to crossings, routes and access for the mobility impaired. Lucy responds to all referable planning applications on behalf of CWA. Lucy may suggest improvements citing best practice where necessary. Richard is delivering two pilot areas for the new wayfinding system to ensure it meets TfL and Borough requirements and objectives. These activities include the Smartmoves magazine, promotion of the walking schemes and the organisation of the annual Smartmoves: London’s Walking and Cycling Conference.
