B OURNE S AILOR THE LOG OF D e ce mb e r 2 0 1 4 V o l u me 8 BO URN E C OM MUNI TY BOA TI NG, I NC. Bourne Community Boating, PO Box 3157, Bourne, MA 02532 A 501(c)(3) Public Charity From the Bridge: Message from the President Can you do a flying jibe standing on the gunnel of an opti, sail on a windy day with just a trash bag for a sail, or conduct a coordinated dance routine on the bows of a daisy of opti's ? Check out Bourne Community Boating !! Each season starts with great promise and renewed energy. Lead by Amy Wright and Sarah Bouchie, BCB got off to a great start. In the Spring, Dave O’Hara coached a joint high school sailing program with a combination of BCB and Sturgis High School sailors. Dave Fallon led power boat instruction which continued to draw youth and adult students with several mother-daughter, father-son combinations participating. This two day classroom and on-the-water course ,developed by US Sailing, is the best program available. Students leaving with confidence and enthusiasm, having mastered basic power boating skills. Dave Fallon also conducted a US Sailing Level 1 certification class. Our Mummichog program, lead by Melissa Meara, is fast becoming one of our most popular programs. Just take a 6 or 7 year old graduate for a walk on the beach. You will be amazed by what these young students will teach you as they turn over rocks to identify the marine life underneath. A grant from the 11th Hour Racing Foundation helped fund our highly successful Belly Biology program led by Cheryl Milliken. BCB strives to educate our students on the importance of being good stewards of our marine environment. Thank you Monice and all the participants who made Phinney's Harbor Day, once again, a huge success. Because of this success, our scholarship funds for Bourne year round residents is assured for 2015. Generosity of our BCB family continues to support our programs. Assisted by a matching fund challenge grant from an anonymous donor, we are $20,000 away from our matching goal or $100,000. These funds will be used in part to start a permanent endowment for BCB. This challenge grant ends December 22. So please consider donating to BCB. I would like to thank our all volunteer Board, Advisors, volunteers, instructors, Fleet Captain, the DNR, Highway department, fire and police, and of course, the parents for trusting your children to BCB's staff. To see the confidence and self esteem demonstrated by our young sailors is what it is all about. To see our kids on the honor role lists, excelling in other extra curricular activities, and now off to college, makes me proud of them. To have the opportunity to write recommendations for our former students/instructors is an honor. I think this program is the community program we had all wished for and we will continue to strive to make improvements. P.S. A special thanks to Sarah Bouchie for her many years with the program, She will be missed by all. BCB wishes you the very best in what ever direction the wind takes you. May your boots be dry and the wind at your back! - Paul Bushueff, Chairman & President 2014 Fundraising Match Challenge A generous anonymous benefactor of Bourne Community Boating has issued a " Matching Challenge Grant" to BCB to help promote financial support from the community we serve. An anonymous donor committed to matching donations form the extended BCB family up to $100,000, with a few restrictions on who qualified for the match. The intention was to get a large amount of donations from the wide BCB community of students, members, volunteers, staff and the families of all of these groups in any amount, no matter how small. We are happy to report that the BCB community has responded, and we have received donations from BCB friends and family far and wide. We are still working to attain our goal, and we are now working under a time limit. We have until December 22 to meet our goal, and we hope that you will help us out. Please, if you have not already, send in your donation in any amount to show your support of BCB at a time when your donation will go further than ever before, and help us reach our generous donor’s goal for BCB. Please send your tax-deductible donation to BCB, PO Box 3157, Bourne MA 02532. Thank You! Taffrail Log: BCB Summer 2014 Programs 2014, BCB’s eighth year of programming, was full of fun and challenges. We managed three seasons of sailing for the first time ever, we offered more class options in the summer than ever before, we worked through a variety of tricky weather, and had fun along the way. In the spring, the Sturgis High School sailing team sailed in Bourne and gave BCB students a chance to learn racing. BCB provided the float space, coach, and a handful of students who wanted to learn, Buzzards Sailing School provided the boats, Sturgis provided the racing team, and the Kingman Yacht Center provided us with a mooring and a dry indoor classroom, without which it would have been impossible to host an early spring sailing program. The team competed in the Cape and Islands League of the New England Scholastic Sailing Association against several local teams, and they even had one win against Sandwich High School! Thank you to all who were involved in making this happen for these students: Scott Zeien for use of the Kingman Yacht Club, Merrily Coyne for coordination with Sturgis and Buzzards, David O’Hara for volunteering to coach, and to all of the parents and students involved. Summer Sailing School started abruptly, with no break between the end of regular school and the start of sailing for most of our students because of all the snow days last winter. Weather continued to dictate our planning for most of the first session. Our first group of Beginner Sailors in particular had a trouble finding days that the wind lay down enough to get out on the water and get some sails up. Luckily, we had a team of very creative sailing instructors to help guide them and keep them interested and no matter how hard it was blowing. We tried garbage-bag sailing (yes, it is what it sounds like), a variety of boats, and every sailing-oriented game or activity in our repertoire. The weather improved dramatically for the second session, allowing for a much more predictable course of study. In the afternoons throughout the summer, our more experienced students in Adventures in Sailing got to try our whole fleet of boats, including Capris, two different Hobie cats, Bullseyes, Lasers and Windsurfers. Thanks once again to Tim and Dave Fallon, the catboat Kathleen visited BCB and took out a few boatloads of BCB students for the unique experience of sailing a big, traditional wooden catboat just as kids would have gotten to experience on Buzzards Bay a century ago. For BCB’s youngest students, Mummichogs was again a huge success. Marine Science instructor Melissa Meara and Sailing Instructor Patrick Holmes teamed up for three weeks of full classes. Half of the students would spend time exploring the habitats and creatures that live around Phinney’s Harbor with Melissa, and half would have an adventure on the water with Patrick. Due to the continuing success of this program, we hope to be able to accommodate even more students in Mummichogs next year and create more kids who are excited to learn to sail when they are old enough. BCB continued the sailing season into the fall this year with afterschool sailing and adult evening sailing. Those that participated got to enjoy some beautiful time on the water during what is often thought of as the best time for sailing on Buzzards Bay. Thanks to everyone who made the summer of 2014 a success, BCB staff, board, students, parents, volunteers and more. We’re already looking forward to the summer of 2015! - Amy Wright, Executive Director 3 Phinney's Harbor Day 2014 This years 4th Annual Phinney’s Harbor Day proved to be an integral part of the 4th of July weekend for locals and visitors alike. Whether people ran the challenging 5k in the morning , tried their hand at sailing or paddle boarding, sat on the beach and enjoyed all the live entertainment or partook in food and beverage everyone seemed to have had a great time. We had over 150 runners take to the course as they traversed road, sand, mud and woods. Congratulations to our overall winner Rick Rheinhardt. And, we would be remiss to not mention the outstanding musical talents of Andrew Lowenstein, Hot Soup, Overtime, Liam Pendergast and more. These local artists donate their time and talent each year. We are so appreciative of our sponsors and their many generous donations which made it such a great success. The Voyage Goods nautical jewelry and the Lemon and Line sailor’s bracelets caused quite the stir under the raffle tent as the winners were called out. And, who didn’t fall in love with the Beach House sign by Wood Bee Antiques or Poots the 8' Bauer sailboat donated by the Mealy family? We had over 80 prizes with an average value of $75.00 or more. What a testimony to our supporters! We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful individuals and companies who recognize the value in our sailing program and give of themselves to help support the cause. Together, we raised enough money to help with program expenses, and most importantly, to replenish our scholarship funds. BCB gives away over $10,000 in need-based scholarships and residency discounts every year, and we depend on the success of fundraisers like Phinney’s Harbor Day to raise this money. Many local individuals, young and old, benefit from the scholarship program. We need your help to keep this welcomed tradition alive! There are not many opportunities for the public to have a beach party on the shores of Bourne. As we approach our fifth year, we are looking for your input on how to improve on our concept and how to get more people involved. Our small band of volunteers work year-round to bring Phinney’s Harbor Day to the community each summer. We welcome your ideas, your energy, or your time to help us develop and improve on one of the most anticipated summer events in town. - Monice Maurice, Board member & Phinney’s Harbor Day Chair A Big Thank You to all our Phinney’s Harbor Day Supporters! Please see our full list of PHD donors, sponsors and supporters in the Honor Roll on page 2. Belly Biology Amy Wright and Cheryl Milliken have connected our Belly Biology program with science programs in our community to provide our students with some great local experiences. Beginners participated in shellfishing lessons as well as learned about the shellfish propagation program from Dan Warncke and Richard Libin of Bourne Department of Natural Resources. Students were able to examine baby shellfish growing in upwellers at the Monument Beach marina, then tried their hands at digging for quahogs and steamer clams on the flats and shallows south of the Tobey Island bridge. Beginners also took a field trip to Aptucxet salt works at the trading post to learn how salt was made in early colonial times. Intermediates participated in a variety of field trips and activities to learn about sea life and marine activity around the Cape. The first session was able to learn about oyster aquaculture from Pat and Jenny Ross, the owners of Monks Cove Oysters. They also spent an afternoon on a tour of MA Maritime Academy, including spending time trying their navigating and piloting skills in the ship simulator and checking out the alternative energies used on campus. Another wonderful afternoon was spent with the Zephyr Education Foundation on a cruise out of Falmouth Harbor to observe and collect organisms and use oceanographic equipment to understand more about the research done by scientists in Woods Hole. Finally, intermediates became citizen scientists by testing water quality and salinity and by collecting marine debris around Tobey Island. This year the Belly Biology program took full advantage of all the supplies we were able to purchase through the 11 th Hour grant. Students regularly used masks and snorkels during times of low wind, which provided a fun alternative activity. They also enjoyed looking at planktonic specimens through our rechargeable microscope in order to identify and draw these fascinating creatures. We continue to encourage our sailors to look more closely at the unique environment in which we play. - Cheryl Milliken, BCB Board Member and Belly Biology Instructor 4 From the Crow’s Nest: The 2015 Program For summer of 2015, BCB plans to build on the programs that worked well, while maintaining our core programs of Beginner, Advanced Beginner and Intermediate sailing. We will again have three weeks of Mummichogs, but we will be adding an additional activity rotation of nautical arts and stories, so we have extended the time. Beginner, Advanced Beginner and Intermediate sailing continue as four week long classes, a formula that works well for us and our students to ensure enough time to learn and build sailing skills. Adventures in Sailing will again be three weeks long, and Sailapalooza, our catch-all program, will be one week. Intro to Racing class has been extended to two weeks long, and will be at the end of the summer to allow students to build their skills before learning the basics of racing. BCB is currently working with the Buzzards Sailing School to develop programs to bring our students to their facility to join in their race days, and to bring Buzzards students to BCB to try our variety of boats. Details for this program, as well as more information on our program offerings, will be coming out in January, stay tuned! Coming in January 2015! Ship’s Carpenter The poem Sea Fever as been a favorite of mine since I was a young student more than 50 years ago. The teacher had I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide asked us to memorize a poem and recite it for the class. It Is a wild call and clear call that may not be denied; made an impression on me then and it still does. Intense study And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, and and commitment to relatively small and discrete objectives, especially at a young age, more often than not will instill And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. lasting memories. There is no doubt in my mind that children - John Masefield, from the poem "Sea Fever" who spend time on the water with Bourne Community Boating and dedicate themselves to becoming proficient sailors will benefit all their lives from this summer of committing to a worthwhile objective. Speaking of windy days, as Masefield does, the young sailors in the first session this past summer certainly go plenty of those! Despite many days of challenging conditions the instructors managed to keep damage to the boats remarkably low. That's the good news. The challenge this year is to bring some of our newly acquired Bull's Eyes up to snuff, install spinnaker hardware on the hulls and masts. Allow me to put in a plug here for getting some more of you adults out on the water. One of the reasons we started our fleet of Bull's Eyes was to encourage adult sailing. These are small keel boats that are really simple to sail and have excellent stability due to their 750 pound lead keel. With a draft of only 30 inches, if you run aground you can easily push yourself off. Please check out our website for more information about open sailing!! If you don't know how to sail, not worries. Lessons are available at low cost to learn to sail these wonderful boats. In addition to work on the sailing fleet we want to upgrade our safety boats. We have been struggling to keep our old engines going since the beginning of the program and are finally beginning to replace our aging (and polluting) engines with more reliable and cleaner running 4 stroke Yamaha engines. install a center console on our 17' Carolina Skiff this winter. The center console with wheel steering instead of tiller steering will make operating the boat much better from a safety standpoint. In closing, we are always looking for volunteers to help maintain our fleet. Please contact Amy Wright and let her know how you can assist! A big thank you to all of those in our community that have put in countless hours keeping the boats afloat! And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.” - John F. Kennedy
