5. In Studio, open the saved file and size down a little. If
you weren’t able to follow along in Photoshop, open
up the file of the same name from the KBS Working
Files directory.
6. Using Trace, select the trace area. Turn off High Pass
Filter and work with the Threshold. Select Trace.
7. Move picture to the side and select the cut line.
8. To remove any background noise, Release the Compound Path and delete the excess.
9. Select the main image and any inside pieces you
want to keep. Make Compound Path. Use Eraser and
smooth any jagged edges.
10. Save as statue_of_liberty.studio file.
11. Let’s make us an Empire State Building. Now, like
I mentioned before, we make some buildings in
the Here There Everywhere class, so we’re going to
just make a couple in this lesson and then you can
practice by making your own and complete the city
scene, or can use the ones provided.

1. Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, open the
statue_of_liberty photo.
2. Right click on the Background Layer in the Layers
Palette and select Layer from Background.
3. Select the Magic Wand tool and click on the sky.
Delete. Repeat that for all areas of the sky, including
in between the crown points. Zoom in, if needed.
4. File/Save As and save as statue_of_liberty_2 in a
PNG format to retain that transparent background.
1. Open the city_scape file and move the Empire State
Building to a new window to use as a reference.
2. Draw a 1.3 x .25” rectangle.
3. Draw a 1 x .65” rectangle, place it above the other
rectangle, slightly overlapping.
4. Draw a .77 x .5” rectangle and place accordingly.
5. Draw a .65 x 1.6” rectangle and place accordingly.
6. Draw a .55 x .4” rectangle and place.
7. On the next one, select rectangle, Ctrl-Up Arrow to
make a copy, hold down the Alt key and adjust it
slightly smaller and place.
8. Ctrl-Up Arrow on that one, select the upper handle,
and drag it down so that it’s only about .1” tall. Hold
down the Alt key and make it slightly smaller again.

9. To make the tower part, draw a .2” x .25” square.
Click on each top point and using your arrow key,
move inward the same amount on each side.
10. Draw a .07 x .034” rectangle.
11. Ctrl-Up Arrow that rectangle. Use your Alt key to
adjust the size.
12. Ctrl-Up Arrow to copy that rectangle, make it a little
narrower and taller.
13. Select all pieces and Align/Align Center.
14. Make a copy of the building in pieces and group to
make adjustments when needed.

Open me_and_kass_brooklyn.
Draw a .25 x .4” rectangle.
Draw a .25 x .5” oval.
Double click on the top point of the oval. Use the
handles to make the top a little more pointed, starting by changing the point to Corner.
5. Align Center the rectangle and oval.
6. Use the arrow key to get it about to the half way
point. Use the handles as guides for ‘center’.
7. Select both pieces and Weld.
8. Use a side handle to make it just a little more narrow
at .225” wide.
9. Ctrl-Arrow to Duplicate Right. Add a little space
between. Group together.
10. Draw a .75 x 1.5” rectangle over the ‘openings’.
11. Draw a .8 x .1” rectangle over the top portion of the
last rectangle.
12. Select all three pieces and Align Center.
13. Make a copy and set aside. Select the two rectangles
and Weld.
14. Select the welded piece and openings and Make
Compound Path.

15. Save.
BUILD A SCENE »
1. Open a new window and draw a 6x8 rectangle.
2. Alt-click the rectangle to make a copy.
3. Select the top handle and drag it down to make the
bottom section, about 2.1” tall for the title (NEW
YORK CITY).
4. Copy the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building
and Brooklyn Bridge over.
5. Draw a .9 x 5” rectangle to represent the World
Trade Center building. Add a point and move it up a
little represent the angles of the building.
6. Open color_palette_nyc and copy it to your working
window.
7. Using the Fill Color Picker tool, make the Statue and
Bridge the mint color, the Empire State building the
beige, and the Trade Center the blue.

8. Copy the remaining buildings to your working window and begin layering your city scape in different
heights and colors.
9. Add transparencies so that as you overlay the buildings, you create a translucent effect.
10. In the Trees font, type an n (by bridge) p (right middle) In the WM Trees font type a w (pine) a q (left
middle).
11. Copy the non-pine tree by the bridge, Flip Horizontally, decrease the size and place at the left building.
12. Fill with colors as desired.
13. Add the brown color to the title box.
14. Type NEW YORK CITY in a white Bebas Neue 72pt
font. Fill with white and turn off the Line Color.
15. Save.
