BONFIGLIOLI TRASMITAL 500 SERIES The Bonfiglioli Trasmital 500 Series of Drum Drives for Transit Mixers has been extended with a new model designed for drum capacity up to 18 cubic meters and it has been enhanced with an electric version to meet the specific requirements of the new hybrid truck applications. The 500 Series, the Trasmital Product range of drive units for Concrete Mixer Truck application started in 1976, when the company called at that time Italsai started their operations in their production facility in Forlì (Italy). The 562 gearbox (along with the larger 522 size) was designed for 8 to 12 cubic meters drum capacity and it had a very different construction layout compared to the current production units, particularly in terms of oscillation system which was located on the external side of the housing and grease lubricated and the support function was provided by a single row ball bearing with the races machined directly on the transmission housing and output flange. But the core of the transmission was already a three stage planetary geartrain, the predecessor of the huge range of planetary system now incorporated in the widest range of drive units currently produced for construction equipment, agricultural, offshore and wind turbines applications. 1 The product range have been updated during the 80’s and new sizes were designed to cover small dumpers applications from 1 to 5mc. Overall, over 60,000 units were produced until the end of the 90’, mostly for the national market. The current series (sizes from 575 to 580) were introduced in the beginning of the year 2000’s, after a significant redesign activity which included a new oil lubricated oscillating system integrated in the gearbox designed to meet the most demanding application of the North American market as well as Eastern Europe and India. In addition, the modular design approach allows the configuration of several features and options such as in line or offset input for a flexible motor installation, integrated PTO for pump drive, speed sensor and a wide ratio availability. Over 250,000 units have been produced until now globally, considering the Bonfiglioli facilities in Italy, Slovakia and India. The 590 gearbox has now been designed in order to extend the application of Transit Mixer Drives to the bigger machines from 14 to 18 cubic meters. With this product Bonfiglioli intends to reinforce their presence in the continuous growing Chinese market, also by investing in a dedicated production line that will be implemented in the new manufacturing plant of Bonfiglioli China. 1. BONFIGLIOLI TRASMITAL 500 SERIES The new 590 has been designed in Italy leveraging the most advanced simulation and design verification techniques including a specific laboratory test stand which is capable to reproduce the duty cycle of the real application including continuous and intermittent torque application along with the radial loading due to the drum weight, additionally a four-bar linkage system hydraulically actuate is capable to reproduce the oscillation and dynamic forces of the truck. As a result, the new design has been proven to be extremely robust and capable to handle higher oscillations degrees between the drum and the support which are nowadays becoming more aggressive due to the higher elasticity of the modern truck frames when driving both on and off-road. The 590 can be offered also in the electric version for Hybrid truck applications: in this the mechanical construction includes a helical parallel gear input reduction with a 60 kW liquid cooled AC motor and an optional emergency motor with quick mechanical disconnect. This version is particularly attractive not only because of its proven higher efficiency and reduced fuel consumption during the phase of loading and unloading when the drum can be operated from the truck battery keeping the diesel engine off, but also for the reduced gas emission as well as low noise level which reduce he environmental impact and make it more desirable for use in town centers environments or night works. The 577E electric drive has been designed for hybrid concrete mixer applications. Hybrid Concrete Mixer Truck equipped with Bonfiglioli 577E was presented at Bauma Munich in 2013.
