Descendants of Henry WEBB

Descendants of Henry WEBB
1-Henry WEBB1 was born on 15 May 1350 in Warwickshire, England.1
General Notes: Webb history from Virginia Webb.
The WEBB family was originally from Dorset, a shire on the southern coast of
Wales in England. For nearly two hundred years the WEBBs had resided in this
place which is near Stratford-on-Avon before Alexander Jr with his four sons
came to America. The brothers had become quite wealthy. They sold their estate
in England for a large sum of money prior to their departure. This English
property was inherited through their ancestor, Sir Henry Webb. A copy of the
letter which Queen Catherine Parr sent her Council (Cabinet Ministers) asking
them to grant her beloved friend, Henry Webb, the lands and estates that had
been mentioned for him is still extant and in possession of Dr George F Webb of
Astabula, Ohio to whom much of the historical data of the Webb family is
credited. These lands had been confiscated by the King at the suppression of
the monasteries and were located in Dorsetshire, England. In later years they
became of value to the children who came to America.
Henry married and had 1 child, Geofrey
2-Geofrey WEBB1 was born on 12 Apr 1372 in Warwickshire, England.1

Military Service : In 1675 Indian raids nearby caused the town to establish a garrison and
they appointed Richard Thayer to be in command of it. He turned out to be quite a
scoundrel who attempted to cheat the Town of Braintree of money by making false
allegations concerning his military exploits against Indians on the town’s behalf. He lists
Christopher in his bill to the town, presented
to the town on 1677, which states, “…two pounds, three shillings, four pence, payed to
Cristiner Weab…” There is no current evidence to suggest that Christopher rendered any
actual military service as a soldier.
Occupation(s) : He was listed in his will as a mill-wright; he was also a surveyor, land
speculator, and Selectman of Braintree.
His name is affixed to the Indian Deed of 10 August 1665, as a representative of the town,
wherein in states that they paid £21.10.0 m for all the eastward land within the boundary of
the Town of Braintree, defined as bounded in the seaside in the North-east, by the boundary
with Dorchester in the North-west, by the boundary with Weymouth in the South-east, and
by the Dorchester boundary line in

the South-west.
The Towne of Brantry voted on 25 Marc 1673 that Christopher Webb Sr, ‘should
forthwith goe and find out a trackt of land, and by a Sirvaer lay out 6000 acers which was the
generall Courts grant unto the Towne of Brantrey and shall make a returne of it in a plot
under the sirvaers hand’, and further, that ‘the Towne dus allow the sayd Web and patners
1500 one thousand five hundred acers for
their paines and charge…’.
He was charged with letting out the common land of the town for harvest, forage and
pasture; he negotiated probate and estate settlements and coordinated farming rights on
common property of the town. He served as Braintree Town clerk from 18 May 1678.
On 27 October 1679 was among three men chosen by the townsfolk of Braintree, ‘to
prosecute their interest in the lands purchased of Josiah Sachem by a treaty uth Boston
Selectmen…’.
He was listed as a Selectman of Braintrey in 1682, and on 4 March 1682 was on a
committee deciding the fate of a dam on the Monotocutt River. A Selectman was one of a
board of officers, generally unpaid, elected annually to manage various local concerns of a
town or township in New England. In this capacity, his name is subscribed to the document
titled, “Remonstrance of the Inhabitants of Braintry to the Colonial Agents : To our Honored
Agents, Joseph Dudley and John Richards, Esqrs.” In that document, they dispute the claims
by Richard Thayer that they are not loyal, and in quite descriptive language tear down
Thayer, while proclaiming their loyalty to the crown. They beg the crown to remember their
liberties as spelled out on their charter, approved by King James and Charles I, and for their
advocates to return after presenting their arguments to (the current sovereign).
On 20 May 1689, ‘Christopher Web Sr. & Joseph Crosby were chosen by the Inhabitants
as their representatives for the Towne of Braintrey to meet the representatives of the rest of
the Townes at Boston on 22 of this Instant…’ (this meeting was an emergency session of the
Inhabitants of Massachusetts convened to vote on whether or not to reinstate the defunct
former Governor, and
government, et al, elected in 1686, until such time as a decision came down from the Crown
concerning the ultimate settlement of government for the entire colony). Again on 4 June
1689, chosen to ‘consult with the Counsel sitting in Boston 5th of this instant June about the
emergencies that came under consideration : ther was chosen Christopher Web Sr. by the
voice of the Assembly meet for their representative.’
Property : The Towne of Brantry voted on 25 Marc 1673 that Christopher Webb Sr,
‘should forthwith goe and find out a trackt of land, and by a Sirvaer lay out 6000 acers which
was the generall Courts grant unto the Towne of Brantrey and shall make a returne of it in a
plot under the sirvaers hand’, and further, that ‘the Towne dus allow the sayd Web and
patners 1500 one thousand five hundred acers for their paines and charge…’. What became
of this land is not yet known. He is listed on 24 February 1661-62 as a resident of Billerica,
Massachusetts, thereafter as a resident of Braintree, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

what Vinton called a, “Quadruple Alliance,” with the Joseph Adam’s family of Braintree, by
marrying two of his sons and daughters.

Property : What land, home and goods may have been owned while residing in Braintree,
no evidence has yet surfaced. His property in Windham can best be outlined by
paraphrasing J. A. Vinton : He moved with his wife and children to Windham Centre,
Windham County, Connecticut in 1707. On 29 January 1706-7, Samuel Webb of Braintree
purchased of Thomas Huntington of Windham, for £233, the fifth ‘home-lot’ at Windham
Centre, with the one-thousand acre right belonging to it (…in the end the land only totaled
about 300-400 acres). There was, at the time, a house on his home-lot, and an apple
orchard on his farm. The house was situated on the west side of the ‘town street’. It was
the second lot north from that of Cates, the first settler, and the second lot south from the
centre lot in the village; the lots being twenty yards wide on the street.
This property and any others acquired since were distributed prior to his death to his sons
and son-in-law.
He also transacted business back in his home-town of Braintree, prior to and after leaving

On consideration of the petition of Mary Pennyman of Braintree, plaintiff, v. Samuel
Webb of Windham, defendant, praying a judgment of the superior court holden at Hartford,
March 12th, 1722/3, in an action of covenant, wherein the said Webb demurred to a certain
part of the declaration, and said it was insufficient to maintain the action, and the petitioner
, the plaintiff, said it was sufficient and prayed judgment : on which the court were of
opinion it was insufficient, and give costs for the defendant : It appeared that in the said

defendant had covenanted that he had at such a time lawful power and good right, to sell a

a certain sum, and thereof brings her suit; which therefore this Assembly is of opinion is a

said judgment is hereby reversed and the petitioner is allowed one more tryal of her said
action at the superior court to be held at Hartford in March next; and the whole of the cost
of the process to follow the final tryal. (Public Records of Connecticut, October 1723

Herald Staff Writer
Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured after a
pickup was rear-ended and pushed into the path of an oncoming car in
east Manatee County on Monday afternoon, Florida Highway Patrol
troopers reported.
Elma A. McCance, 65, of 17212 Waterline Road, and Merrill McCance,
73, of Addison, Mich., were killed when a pickup they were riding in
collided head-on with a car on State Road 64 near Carlos E. Haile Middle
School about six miles east of Bradenton. The driver of their pickup,
Marion McCance, 69, also of 17212 Waterline Road, was taken by
Bayflite helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The
driver of the car they collided with, William W. Ward, 39, of Tampa also
was flown to Bayfront.
Marion McCance was listed in fair condition at the hospital, while Ward
was still in the emergency room Monday night, a nursing supervisor said.
According to troopers: At about 12:05 p.m., the McCance vehicle was
westbound on State Road 64 and slowing down as it approached Haile
Middle School. It was hit in the rear by a pickup driven by Eric Lynn
Miller, 35, of 2705 Sixth St. W., who did not slow down. Miller
swerved his truck to the right shoulder, but it struck the right rear of the
McCance truck, sending it into the eastbound lane into the path of Ward's
car, which was traveling about 55 mph. The two vehicles struck head-on.
"He (Miller) rolled up on them quickly and didn't realize there was such a
difference in speed," said highway patrol Sgt. Tom Przybylowicz.
The McCance truck spun around and wound up on the south shoulder,
while Ward's car rotated and came to rest in the middle of the road.
Traffic had to be rerouted while troopers investigated the crash.
Both Elma and Merrill McCance were killed on impact. Miller was not
injured. He was charged with careless driving and failing to wear
corrective lenses. Alcohol was not a factor. Everyone involved in the
accident was wearing seat belts.

By 1820 the David Webb family had moved from Oneida County to Genesee
County, New York thence to the Firelands.
From the Monroeville Spectator, Apr. 8, 1875, by Chester Ruggles : David Webb’s
family arrived here in the spring of 1821. They came from the town of Riga,
Genesee Co., New York, the mode of conveyance being by wagon to Buffalo, and
from thence to Portland (now Sandusky City) by water, thus enjoying a voyage
upon the first steamboat that was ever known to have traversed the blue waters of
Lake Erie. Having arrived at Portland (their destination being David Underhill’s on
the east bank of the Huron River), they passed through, on their way, the following
places: Bloomingville, Cook’s Corners and Monroeville; these were ‘way marks’ in
the wilderness at the time, the road having no bounds or limits. After arriving at
David Underhill’s they commenced the pioneer life of cutting down trees, making
lumber, clearing land, cultivating the soil.
Condensed from the Firelands Pioneer, The History of Webb Settlement, by Ezra
Webb : ”(In 1822) David Webb and his son Harvey purchased from the Executors of
Jonas Cook two hundred acres more or less about 3 miles north-west of Norwalk
which formed the nucleus of the Webb Settlement. Harvey took one hundred acres
from the northe side of the tract for which he gave 250 gold dollars which left his
father, after and accurate survey, 109 acres

Mary married John SHAKESPEARE. John died in 1601 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.
They had one son: William.
General Notes: John Shakespeare was a tanner and glovemaker. He was an alderman of
Stratford for years. He also served a term as high bailiff, or mayor. Toward the
end of his life John Shakespeare lost most of his money. When he died in 1601 he left William only
a little real estate.
9-William SHAKESPEARE was born on 23 Apr 1564.
General Notes: William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in 1564. This
was the sixth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He was christened on April
26 of that year. The day of his birth is unknown. It has long been celebrated on April 23, the
feast of St. George. By 1592 Shakespeare was in London and was already recognized as an actor
and playwright. He was then 28 years old. In that year Robert Greene, a
playwright, accused him of borrowing from the plays of others.
Between 1592 and 1594, plague kept the London theaters closed most of the
time. During these years Shakespeare wrote his earliest sonnets and two long
narrative poems, 'Venus and Adonis' and 'The Rape of Lucrece'. Both were
printed by Richard Field, a boyhood friend from Stratford. They were well
received and helped establish him as a poet.
Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603. King James I followed her to the throne.
Shakespeare's theatrical company was taken under the king's patronage and
called the King's Company. Shakespeare and the other actors were made
officers of the royal household.
Shakespeare retired from his theater work in 1610 and returned to Stratford.
On April 23, 1616, Shakespeare died at the age of 52. This date is according
to the Old Style, or Julian, calendar of his time. The New Style, or Gregorian,
calendar date is May 3, 1616 He was buried in the chancel of the Church of the Holy Trinity in
Stratford.
In 1607, when he was 43, he may have suffered a serious physical breakdown.
In the same year his older daughter Susanna married John Hall, a doctor. The
next year Shakespeare's first grandchild, Elizabeth, was born. Also in 1607 his
brother Edmund, also a London actor, died at the age of 27.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small country town. Stratford was
famous for its malting. The black plague killed in 1564 one out of seven of the town's 1,500
inhabitants. Shakespeare was the eldest son of Mary Arden, the daughter of a local landowner,
and her husband, John Shakespeare (c. 1530-1601), a glover and wood dealer. John Aubrey
(1626-1697) tells in Brief Lives that Shakespeare's father was a butcher and the young William
exercised his father's trade, "but when he kill'd a Calfe he would do it in a high style, and make a
speech." In 1568 John Shakespeare was made a mayor of Stratford and a justice of peace. His
wool business failed in the 1570s, and in 1580 he was fined £40, with other 140 men, for failing
to find surety to keep the peace. There is not record that his fine was paid. Later the church
commissioners reported of him and eight other men that they had failed to attend church "for fear
of process for debt". The family's position was restored in the 1590s by earnings of William
Shakespeare, and in 1596 he was awarded a coat of arms.
William married Anne HATHAWAY in 1582 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.
7-Abigail WEBB was born about 1516.
