“The Scarlet Ibis” Symbolism Project Ayanna Garvin 11/25/13 B1 “He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s.” • They both had small heads, not in proportion with their bodies. They had red skin in color and long skinny fragile legs. This connects Doodle and the Ibis because it explains how weak there bodies where in the story, then with the weak fragile bodies shows that any harm would cause easily death. “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.” • This quote shows that Doodle is struggling to be in a world were no one thought that he would still be alive. At the age of five years old and not knowing how to walk, he was kind of a disappointment. When the Ibis was in the tree and they found out that he was not in the right environment it connects Doodle and the Ibis showing that they are struggling to fit in with surrounding where they can not survive. “Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty.” • When doodle fell backward onto the earth, bleeding from the mouth, the front of his shirt stained with a brilliant red, the color of the scarlet ibis, he never before seemed so fragile. He was being seen for more than his fragile body. When the Ibis had fallen out of the tree and died he was not seen as a dead bird he was viewed as a bird that tried to survive in a environment which it did not belong. “At that moment the bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet…..” • The bird was as uncoordinated as Doodle and it also tumbled down to the grown similar to how Doodle body did at death. When the Ibis died he’d tried to fly and leave from the tree but failed an fell to its death. When Doodle and his brother were in the woods running from the rain Doodle did not succeed and he also fell to his death and died. This situation shows that both believed they could do things and believed in themselves. However, they couldn’t and that’s why death came into the story. Dancer • Dancing symbolizes, style, creativity and character orientation. Dancers show different varieties of dancing styles through the use of vary tempo’s, cultures and religions. Myself also can dance to different tempo’s and rhythms. The style that a dancer has show the technique and postures learned from our years of dance. My technique and posture during dance are beautiful with my routine. The dancers tend to portray, positive attitudes to their audiences and individuals. • Model A model multitasks well, has a great personality, and a sense of style. I possess all of these traits and feel that a model symbolizes me. Many of the models that I know balance their careers with their personal lives; I balance track, dance, and school. Models personalities are colorful, different, and positive. My personality is confident, passionate, and reliable. These traits are important to have because the modeling industry can be a cruel place if you are not confident about yourself and being reliable as well as passionate allows for more job opportunities because designers will hire you if they can count on you to be professional and represent their clothing line with excitement. Generally the fashion style of a model is unusual but in a good way. My fashion is different from my classmates and this shows that I am starting new fashion trends like models. Cheetah • Cheetahs symbolize strength, speed, and independence. Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal that outrun many others. Cheetahs run a lot for exercise as well as do I. Most cheetahs are strong enough to fight battles without any other cheetahs around. Cheetahs do not hang in large clans and occasionally roam alone with other members of their species. As well as I do, I don’t tend to hang around a lot of people and usually hang around in small groups. Red Cross • The Red Cross symbolizes medical aid, donations, and protection. The Red Cross helps people that have experienced a major event that left them with a need of shelter, medical assistance, and supplies. The Red Cross symbolizes me because I help others that are in need as well. I always go out of my way to make sure that someone less fortunate than myself has a chance to experience some of the benefits that I have had throughout my life.
