A Letter From our Chairman
I
remember a quote from Jim
Collins saying “that it is imperative
to face the brutal facts.” It is true,
Gina Mitchell, has accepted a
job with The Woodlands Chamber of
Commerce and so the search for her
replacement has begun. Gina, thanks
for your dedication and hard work in
Conroe and we wish you good luck
in your new job. However, I also
remember reading from Abraham
Lincoln that says “the best way to
predict the future is to create it!” By now you have been made aware
Brian Bondy was hired as our new president and starts his duties
on March 21. Brian will take our Chamber and help us achieve the
next level of success!
Our chamber is dedicated to advancing the general welfare
and prosperity of the area, improving the business climate and
advocating on behalf of our members. Our board of directors is
comprised of business and community leaders who are dedicated to
growing the Chamber membership and influence throughout the
region.
The Chamber is positioned to have a great year. With the hope
of a strong economy and the reality of a growing population,
the business environment will be one of the best in the Country.
Recently, the City of Conroe and the surrounding areas were
recognized as one of the fastest growing areas in Texas. As we look
ahead, this area’s future is bright and this year promises to be an
exciting time. We have enjoyed incredible growth and the Chamber
has played an important role, working to create jobs and advocating
for a positive business environment that is conducive to growth and
prosperity. Membership in the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of
Commerce offers the opportunity to work alongside other business
leaders to make a positive impact on our region, making it one of
the best places to live, work and build a business.
I encourage you to get involved and be part of the solutions.
God Bless you
Hector A. Forestier

We are Proud to Announce Brian Bondy, New Chamber President!
Please join the us in
welcoming Brian Bondy
as the new president of
the Conroe/Lake Conroe
Chamber of Commerce!
Brian begins with us on
March 21, 2016, and he
brings with him a wealth
of experience which will
greatly benefit and grow
our Chamber.
Brian started as president
of the San Marcos Area
Chamber of Commerce
in February 2011. Prior to
joining the Chamber in San
Marcos, he was president of the Kerrville Area Chamber for
about eight years. He has been a part of Chamber work
in Texas and Missouri since 1992 serving as a volunteer,
committee member, committee chair, board member and
board officer before transitioning to the 'other side of the
desk' in 1995 with the Northwest Communities Chamber
of Commerce. Bondy graduated from the US Chamber
of Commerce Institute for Organization Management
in 2002 earning the IOM designation. He specializes in
building member-centric organizations where the investors
of the organization have an opportunity to maximize their
investments in the Chamber. Building Chamber value is
something he’s learned from business owners’ feedback
across a wide spectrum of communities he’s served.
Prior to that time, he spent 15 years in the newspaper
business with the Houston Chronicle, Houston Business
Journal, Houston Community Newspapers and Suburban
Journals of Greater St. Louis. He graduated from Stephen F.
Austin State University with a degree in Communications and
it was at SFA where he met his wife Jean. This past January
they celebrated their 33rd anniversary. They have two
daughters, Lauren, a teacher in Austin, and Erin, a research
assistant in Boston, Massachusetts.
We appreciate our Emerald Investors!
In their spare time, Brian and Jean enjoy traveling, playing
golf, wine tasting and together they penned a daily wine
blog writing about a different variety of wine every day for a
year.

Next Generation Leadership Students Learn about Infrastructure
by Candice Dolley
treatment center. Houston kept us entertained as he joked that
"waste" flows downhill.
Our third guest speaker was Rob Koester, the vice president of
consumer products at Consolidated Communications, Inc. His
company started out as a telephone company 122 years ago
and now serves 11 states. Data and internet are the company’s
primary products. Koester discussed how Consolidated
Communications serves three areas: consumer, commercial and
carriers. The consumer area deals with phones and land lines,
which he joked people still have. The next area is commercial
dealing with the big businesses. The third area is carriers, such
as AT&T and Verizon. His company tries to keep as much of
their wiring underground as possible because it tends to be less
disrupted and safer.
At each Next Generation Leadership meeting, we have speakers
talk to us about different aspects of Montgomery County. This
month’s meeting was about infrastructure. We had four guest
speakers addressing energy, water, telecommunications and
transportation issues in the county.
The first speaker was Kelly Carson, the Entergy Texas energy
efficiency program manager. We learned about how electricity
can be created elsewhere and used locally when needed.
Carson also mentioned how his efficiency programs save people
money. Every time someone touches the thermostat, he or she is
making a purchasing decision. Another insight was how Entergy
helps out in other areas of the country when a disaster occurs.
Entergy sends out linemen and other workers to get power back
up in states affected by storms and events like Hurricane Sandy.
The second speaker was Jace Houston, the San Jacinto River
Authority general manager. He talked about our water usage
in Montgomery County. Montgomery County has used ground
water for many years, because it is cheaper than treating surface
water. That changed recently with the new water treatment
facility on Lake Conroe. Houston stated there are two ways to
deal with waste. One way is to have your own septic tank that
treats your waste at your own home or waste can be sent to a
Our final speaker was Brent Sherrod, the managing partner
at American Civil Engineering Services, L.P. He talked about
transportation. Sherrod stated the majority of new roads are
made by private companies as they build new developments. He
gave us an understanding that before roads can be built, costbenefit and environmental studies must be done, which takes
years. With the high growth in Montgomery County, decisions for
what roads need to be built, added onto or upgraded have to
be made regularly by our local elected officials.
This meeting on infrastructure was truly interesting and we learned
a lot about services that we normally do not pay much attention
to on a daily basis. It was great hearing what considerations
go into these services that affect quality of life in Montgomery
County. I truly look forward to each Next Generation Leadership
Program meeting because I learn so much and get to meet some
really great people in our community.

San Jacinto River Authority Water Treatment Plant
Construction of the
San Jacinto River
Authority’s (SJRA)
new surface water
treatment plant and
transmission pipeline
delivery system
began in the summer
of 2012.
In September of
2015, construction
was finally near
completion. At that time, the GRP had concluded flushing and
disinfection of the transmission lines in preparation for delivering
treated surface water. Near the end of September, the GRP
began delivering treated surface water to Rayford Road MUD,
The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency and May Valley, Southern
Montgomery County MUD, and Mid-South Synergy Water
Resources. The City of Conroe and the City of Oak Ridge North
began receiving treated surface water in December. The
treated drinking water from the new SJRA plant is blended with
existing groundwater supplies from each utility’s existing water
wells.
SJRA has established the delivery of high quality, safe drinking
water supplies as its top priority in developing its surface water
treatment and supply systems. A very robust treatment process
was selected, which includes granulated activated carbon,
micro filtration, air stripping, and disinfection. A comprehensive
sampling and testing program has been implemented in
cooperation with retail water providers receiving treated surface
water in order to maintain compliance with all State and Federal
drinking water regulations.
The SJRA is not only creating lasting water solutions for future
generations, but it is also ensuring that Montgomery County’s
economic engine has a plentiful supply of water to fuel its
continued growth.
On behalf of SJRA, we appreciate your support and patience
throughout the duration of this project. For more detailed
information on the GRP program, please visit www.sjra.net/grp.

LMC Class of 2016 Enjoys Public Safety Session
Sponsored by the City of Conroe
the airport from the airport tower and get
a behind-the-scenes look at the apache
helicopters at the airport.
To end the day, the class visited the
newly opened San Jacinto River Authority
surface water treatment plant for a
presentation by Mark Smith, division
manager of the SJRA GRP Division, and a
tour of the plant.
“The class saw the many facets of
infrastructure and how it comes to
life,” said Peterson. “This is a great
class of current and future leaders of
Montgomery County.”
The Leadership Montgomery County
(LMC) Class of 2016 recently got a
look into some of the latest issues and
accomplishments in infrastructure
in Montgomery County at their
Infrastructure Session sponsored by
Entergy Texas.
The Infrastructure Session allowed the 45
business and community leaders to take
a deeper look into the inner workings of
the county, from water and electricity to
roads and more. Erich Peterson of Jones
& Carter served as the session director,
planning the day for the class. The day
began with an overview of infrastructure
from Peterson and Virgil Yoakum of
Woodforest Development, explaining
how it happens including the funding and
how growth affects it.
The morning part of the day, held at the
San Jacinto River Authority, focused on
public works and water. Scott Taylor,
director of infrastructure services for the
City of Conroe spoke about the public
works perspective. Paul Nelson of the
Lone Star Groundwater Conservation
District presented on water regulations in
Montgomery County. San Jacinto River
Authority General Manager Jace Houston
spoke to the class about the San Jacinto
River Authority and it’s role in the county,
before the class took a tour of the Lake
Conroe Dam. Allen East of Entergy
Texas then spoke to the class about the
electricity infrastructure in the county and
the region.
The class spent the afternoon seeing
some of the county’s infrastructure. After
a presentation by Airport Director Scott
Smith about the Conroe North Houston
Regional Airport at the Galaxy FBO, the
class was given the opportunity to view

The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce is again putting together a Buyers Group for
the Montgomery County Fair Association auction this year. Participation in the group is limited to
members of the Chamber.
Our members know that the youth of Montgomery County are an important part of this
community. Consequently, there has always been a lot of interest in supporting the auction, but
many have not been able to do so because of the high cost of the items auctioned. This is a way
for all of our members to participate.
ONLY THOSE MONIES DONATED SPECIFICALLY TO THE BUYERS GROUP ARE SPENT AT THE
AUCTION. NO GENERAL FUNDS FROM THE CHAMBER ARE USED.
Donations of $100 or more receive an invitation to the Buyer’s Party.
All donations must be received at the Chamber office (P.O. Box 2347, Conroe 77305)
no later than April 1, 2016.
ALL DONATIONS WILL BE SPENT ON THE JUNIOR HOMEMAKING AND LIVESTOCK

Q&A
13
Business Insight with
Russo'sNew York
Pizzeria
Q. Why are you in business?
A. To enjoy a better quality of life and the
thrill of adding value to the community.
Q. Why are in this type of business?
A. I’m an entrepreneur and back in 2009
I wanted to establish and own several
businesses in the area (where we have
been living close to 16 years now) that
would allow my family to have a better
quality of life and get more involve with
the community we live in, while having
the opportunity to hire, develop and
succeed with great people.
Q. What is your background?
A. My background is in general business
management and manufacturing.
I have a Business Management
degree from the University of Texas at
Austin as well as hands-on training in
management, leadership, problem
solving and quality assurance. My
work experience includes 15 years as
managing director in automotive parts
manufacturing companies ranging
from 200 to 400 employees serving as
Tier 1 supplier for Volkswagen, Ford,
General Motors, Chrysler, BMW. I’m also
a general business consultant, working
with businesses in Texas, Mexico and
California.
Q. How long have you been in business?
A. I have been in the restaurant business
for over 6 years, Overall 23 years.
Q. How did you get started in this
business?
A. While searching for opportunities to
buy existing businesses, Russo’s New York
Pizzeria in The Woodlands (that had been
operating for a couple of years) became
for sale and we decided to buy it. After
5 years and having owned and operated
2 other restaurants and bars, I decided to
expand the Russo’s Brand to Conroe and
Spring.
Q. How did you get the background
and skills necessary to run this type of
business?
A. The general business management
and leadership principles I believe
are the same in every business. My
experience as managing director in the
automotive industry helped me develop
my leadership, finance, human resource,
quality assurance, problem solving,
and customer service skills. The specific
restaurants skills I developed through the
experience in my own restaurant as well
as benchmarking with the best practices
in the industry.
Q. How has technology, such as
computers and the internet, impacted on
how you conduct business?
A. Very important. In the restaurant
industry Point of Sale systems (POS) are
an essential tool from capturing orders
to communicating with the kitchen
operation and food delivery, manage
payroll, having valuable reporting for
decision making and feeding data for
accounting systems. Also online ordering
has become increasingly popular and is
a very efficient way to manage orders.
Marketing though Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, Websites, emails etc. has
become a must practice to stay “top
of mind” with our current and potential
customers.

Conroe, TX 77304
(936) 539-5900
www.nypizzeria.com
Q. Do you have employees? How many?
A. We currently have around 50 team
members between full time and part
time.
Q. What is the need that your business
exists to satisfy?
A. We are a hospitality business, so it's
not about satisfying the “need to eat”
but the need to enjoy the sweet life “La
Dolce Vita” by providing an experience
proposition of enjoying great food, with
great service in a great environment.
Q. How does your company differentiate
itself?
A. The Russo’s concept blends very nicely
the casual ambiance of a true New York
City pizzeria with the high quality “from
scratch” Italian recipes used in fine dining
that we include in our fresh menu items.
Our New York style pizza has gained
several awards in Houston and our Italian
recipes in pastas, appetizers, soups and
salads have been greatly complimented
by food critics and customers.
Q. Who are the key players in the
business?
A. There are several and really depends
on the location and the “Experience
Proposition” the customer is looking for:
from fine dining, to fast casual, to fast
food. We are situated in between fine
dining and fast casual.
