Avalara, the company I work for, needs awesome Python coders. We have several job openings.
The company has several products (big and lots of b2b, b2c clients). Two of them is being rewritten in Python and new stack. Fresh and brand new code base. I am part of Certs product,
which has medium to advance complexity. The full re-write has been approved. We're starting
immediately. We have 2 people so far working under new team, and we're have a budget for 3
more.
The office is located: 10620 Treena Street, Suite 160 San Diego, CA 92131
Here is the full stack. The data model will be stored as documents (JSON)
 nginx - web front end HTTP server
 uwsgi - application container
 flask - super light web framework and can expose resources in RESTful manner
 Jinja2 - template engine
 sqlalchemy - ORM that supports many Databases including Oracle. Once defined in Python code and
it's very easy to migrate to other DBs.
 redis - in memory key-value store (for session management and caching)
 celery - distributed task queue
 twilio - for robot calling
 ocropus - Google sponsored OCR system written in Python, NumPy, and SciPy focusing on the use of
large scale machine learning for addressing problems in document analysis.
 ubuntu - Linux OS
 PostgreSQL - Open source object-relational database. It's enterprise class with great ACID
compliance.
 Salt - deployment management
 SQS - messaging
 S3 - for blob data storage
 nose - python test driver
 git - for versioning control

Job Summary: The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for the enhancement
and support of the customer-facing application that is the foundation for AvaTax
Certs The successful candidate will lead the development of this application,
become versed in the suite of products that enable the processing of sales tax
returns, and work with the AvaTax Certs development team to build a tightly
integrated and high quality service. This position requires communication with
Product Management to understand end-user requirements and with Quality
Assurance to design and develop automated, end-to-end test capability.
Job Duties:
1. Innovate to exceed customer needs and expectations.
2. Design new feature functionality in a highly collaborative manner with
stakeholders.
3. Implement features with high-quality, well-documented, test-driven, robust,
maintainable code
4. Maintain and enhance existing software applications.
5. Collaborate with development, QA, and Product Management team members
to create best in class solutions.
6. Develop a “big picture” understanding of the customer use cases and
detailed business requirements for which the software provides solutions.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
2. 6+ years of designing and building successful web-based software
applications and solutions
3. Experience building production code with open source languages and Linux
required.
4. Experience with database-backed web applications required.
5. Experience with web services, Nginx, PostgreSQL, Flask, SQLAlchemy,
Python, and JavaScript
6. Excellent problem solving skills, must be able to think "outside the box"
7. Experience with architecting highly available and scalable systems.
8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
9. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple
tasks in a fast paced environment,
10.Experience working with a geographically distributed team preferred.
11.Complete understanding of Service Oriented Architecture and Agile
programming principles
12.Experience with the full software development life cycle
13.Self-motivated, passionate, and hard working with the ability to perform at a
fast pace with minimal supervision
