I asked my students how they would change a mixed number to an improper fraction.
How they would change an improper fraction to a mixed number.
These are the methods they came up with.

This student took 1 2/4. They changed the 1 to 4/4 and then added the 2/4 to get 6/4.

This student took 3 6/12 and multiplied the denominator by the numerator to get 36. Then they added the numerator or 6 to the 36 to get 42. Then they kept the denominator the same.
This works because the denominator tells us
how many pieces we need to make a whole. The 3 means three wholes with 12 pieces to
each one. So we have 3 groups of 12 or
3 x 12 which gives us 36. We now add the
6 additional pieces to the 36 and have 42
total pieces. The denominator stays the same
because we still need 12 to make one whole.

This student took 2 5/7 and changed it to 19/7. They changed the 2 into 14/7 by doubling the denominator. They knew that 7 is what is need to make one whole so they knew they needed 14/7 to make to. Then they took the 5/7 and added it to the 14/7 to get 19/7.

To change 3 2/4 into an improper fraction. This student multiplied the denominator by the whole number. They took the product of 4 x 3 which is 12 and added it to the numerator to get 14. They put 14 as the numerator and then kept the original denominator of 4 the same. So the answer is 14/4.

This student did the same process as the student on the last slide. This process is written differently. This student changed 3 2/4 into 14/4.
This student multiplied the denominator by the whole number and then added the numerator to get 14. Then they kept their denominator the same.

To change 5/2 into a mixed number, this student looked at the denominator. They counted by 2 to get as close to the numerator as possible. They saw that if they counted by 2 two times that would get them to four and give them 2 whole number. They saw that they were one number off and used that as a numerator. They took the 2 wholes and the 1 remaining to get 2 1/2.

This student changed 3/2 into 1 1/2. They took the numerator and divided by
they denominator and got 1 remainder 1. They took the whole time that 2 can go into
3 and put that as their whole number. The
remainder of 1 was used as the numerator
and kept the denominator of 2
the same.

This student took 7/4 and changed it to 1 3/4
They used the whole number on top as their whole number
for the mixed number. They used the remainder of 3 as their
numerator and kept the denominator the same.
