4 Big Ideas To Make This
Your Most Memorable Fall Season Ever
It’s already time for fall, even though hot summer days are
behind us, fall is a beautiful time of year that offers a variety of fun
options. Some are unique to the fall season, and some are just
because there is something about fall and freshly baked pie.
Take Some Fall Family Pictures: Fall offers us such a gorgeous
array of rich colors and golden light that it’s the perfect time of the
year to take annual family photos. There are some really talented
and creative photos out there today who will capture beautiful
memories for you without creating any awkward family photos.
Go To An Apple Festival: An apple festival is a charming
throwback to days gone by when people lived the “farm to table”
experience every day. Some apple festivals allow you the
experience of picking the fruit, and others offer a peek into life on
an orchard. You’ll usually find delicious apple themed treats like
pancakes, pies, crisps, apple cider, ice cream, and more. To find a
festival near you, simply Google “apple festivals” in your location.
Spend a Saturday Pickling: You don’t have to limit yourself to
just pickling pickles, although homemade pickles are awesome.
But you can pickle watermelon rinds, asparagus, lemons, figs,
pears, peppers, carrots, cauliflower, and so much more. And
pickling doesn’t have to be hard, there are tons of easy pickling
instructions online and you can learn to do just about anything on
YouTube. www.GrowingAGreenerWorld.com and
www.FoodNetwork.com are great places to start, just type
“pickling” into the search fields. Bonus: Homemade “pickled
anything” makes a delicious and thoughtful gift.
Bake A Pie…From Scratch: What’s Fall without the smell of a
freshly baked apple or berry pie wafting through your house on a
Sunday afternoon? Use the apples you picked up on your visit to
an apple festival, or fresh berries you grabbed from your local
farmer’s market, either way you’ll win big with the piecrust found
here: www.gbakes.com just search “best pie crust ever”. This is a
blog created by professional pastry chef Gesine Bullock Prado,
and you can also watch a video of her teaching how to make the
perfect piecrust on YouTube, just search “Gesine bakes a wild
blueberry pie.” (Cool fact: she’s Sandra Bullock’s little sister.)
Have a fun and safe Fall and I hope you get out there and enjoy
the beauty and bounty of the season!

Gluten-Free, Vegan Apple And Oat Tartlets
By David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl
Makes 4 Tartlets
Crust
½ cup gluten free rolled oats
½ cup raw sunflower seeds
8 fresh dates, pitted
2 Tbsp. coconut oil, room temp
pinch of salt
Topping
3 small red apples
½ lemon, juiced
Filling
4 Tbsp. almond butter
1 Tbsp. maple syrup
1 Tbsp. olive oil
2 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place oats and seeds in food processor
and grind on high for about 30 seconds, until you get a crumbly
oat/seed flour. Add pitted dates, coconut oil, and salt and blend about
another 30 seconds to form a sticky, crumbly mixture. Press dough into
four 4-inch greased tartlet dishes and bake for about 10 min. Use your
food processor to slice the cored apples into paper-thin slices, and
squeeze with lemon juice. Next fill each par-baked tartlet with 1 Tbsp
almond butter, arrange apples on top, brush with maple syrup and olive
oil and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then bake the tartlets for 10-15 min.
more. They are great “as is” or topped with organic vanilla ice cream.

Antique Apples Are Growing In Popularity And
Here Are Some Of The Best Ones To Try…
The Idea Corner
There are literally thousands of different kinds of apples but
you will most likely see just 8 or 10 varieties such as, Red
Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and
McIntosh at your local supermarket. That’s because there are only
about 10 varieties that make up 80% of the apples grown for
consumption, and that’s the business of apples.
But, because of people’s interest in local, organic farming
there has been a resurgence of popularity in heirloom, or “antique”
apple growing. By growing heirloom apples, small orchards get a
competitive advantage over the orchards that mass produce. Here
are some antique apples you might want to look for at your next
trip to your farmers market or an apple festival.
Maiden’s Blush – This small, to medium sized apple is harvested
in August/September and is an heirloom that dates back to the
1700’s. It is described as crisp and tender, with vanilla and citrus
notes, but it is sharp and will cause you to pucker straight from the
tree. It will mellow a bit with storage, but this apple is best for
cooking, desserts, and making cider.
Ribston Pippin – This little beauty hails from the early 1700’s in
England. This apple is harvested in mid-September and is
described as hard and crisp. It is a sweet apple that is great for
eating fresh, and it also works great for baking, and making ciders
and sauces. It is thought that the Ribston Pippin is perhaps one of
the parents of a Cox Pippin.
Roxbury Russet – This antique apple is believed to be the first
apple variety originating in North America, possibly dating back to
Massachusetts in 1649. This medium sized apple ripens in
October and is very sweet due to its high sugar content. This
makes for good fresh eating and great cider making.
Golden Russet – This golden beauty dates back to England in the
late 1600’s and is often claimed as the best tasting of the russet
apples. It’s a juicy apple that becomes ripe in October. The
Golden Russet’s honey-like sweetness makes it popular for eating
fresh and highly sought after for cider making.
There are so many delicious heirloom apples to discover
this is just a snapshot into a few that are available.
