Frame Rate
Frame rate is the number of images that occur in a second of time. For example, television is 30 frames per second (FPS),
movies are 24 FPS and animation is 12 FPS. In surveillance, you have a choice of what frame rate to record, anywhere from 1
FPS to 30 FPS. Most cameras are capable of frame rates up to 30 FPS, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to record
at the full 30 FPS. Doing so creates redundant data and consumes excess bandwidth and storage. The average frame rate in
the security industry falls between 5 and 15 FPS.
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet
and transmits low voltage power
and video in a single cable,
dramatically simplifying installation.

aisles, etc. Choke points are areas where traffic is forced to

Where to Store Video
With video management software
(VMS) video is stored on one or
more hard drives in the server or
on an external NAS or SAN device.
With a network video recorder
(NVR), video is usually stored on
one or more internal drives.
A single screen interface is the key to managing live video, recorded video and camera
configuration. This can be accomplished with video management software or a network
video recorder, either through a PC or mobile apps.
For larger scale camera deployments, multi-monitor “camera walls” can be used.
