Untitled - Divine Infant

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR
If you tuned in last week, you read the thoughts I presented to the AdvancED Review Board that is
visiting and evaluating all schools in the Archdiocese. My thoughts pertained to Catholic education in
general, but they were greatly influenced by the situation here at Divine Infant in particular.
Divine Infant Parish and School has been in decline for the past 30 years. That is no one's fault. It is
just the demographic, social, and ecclesial reality. Our neighborhood has aged. There are not as many
young, large families as there were a generation ago. Many of the new families in our neighborhood are
not Catholic. Many of the Catholics in our neighborhood simply do not practice their faith. These and
other factors have contributed to the decline in membership, Mass attendance, contributions, and school
enrollment at our parish.
The parish has always subsidized the school's budget. Up until six years ago, the ordinary operating revenue of the
parish exceeded the subsidy to the school, but then the school subsidy began to surpass the parish surplus. Since fiscal
2009-2010 we have had to draw from savings as seen on this chart.

Aside from the blip in fiscal 2012-2013 when a very generous parishioner gave a $100,000 Easter gift, fiscal 20142015 will continue this graveyard spin as we will most likely need around $400,000 from savings. This means that in six
years the school has needed about $1.3 million dollars from parish savings to balance its budget. Quite frankly, the elephant in the room -- and it is big, hungry elephant -- is the school. I love our school and our students and have nothing
but admiration and respect for our staff and faculty. But love for the school does not pay the bills. The school is hemorrhaging money. This cannot continue. Something needs to change, and it needs to change quickly. At this rate, we will
deplete our savings within a few years.
There are a few simple fixes that could help us. We could win big in the lottery (of course, I would have to buy a
ticket). Or we could suddenly increase school enrollment by 100 students or more. Or we could cut back on the school
payroll by replacing all the teachers with super-intelligent cyborgs. Unfortunately, those are all long-shots. The painful
truth is that in this coming fiscal year, we are going to have to bite the bullet and begin to make some very serious
changes.
On the plus side, we have made and are continuing to make efforts to revitalize our parish. Last year we went
through the archdiocesan Parish Transformation process. Many good ideas came from that experience to help rejuvenate our parish. The current parish census is one example. The census is helping us to make better contact with active
parishioners and to reach out to those who are non-active. Because of the census, we have had a few people come
back to church after being absent for many years.
Soon you will be hearing about the To Teach Who Christ Is archdiocesan campaign. It is a pledge drive that will begin
this July and try to raise 1.3 times our annual offering (about $750,000) over the next five years. Forty percent of each
dollar will go to the Archdiocese to fund Catholic education initiatives, and 60% will remain in the parish to help us tackle
some necessary projects.
Of course, these efforts will not completely reverse trends and provide all the funds we need. They will help a bit, but
to keep our parish viable we are going to have to make some serious changes. There will have to be cut-backs, and we
will have to face some very difficult decisions regarding our school. It is NOT my intention simply to close the school, but
if we do not change things for the better, things will change themselves for the worse.
Fr. Michael
THANK YOU
On April 9th, our son David and his family were
devasted by the tornado in Fairdale, IL. We are very
grateful to so many of our D.I. family, St. Vincent de
Paul Society and the D.I. Alumni who have been so
generous to our family. The power of prayer is alive
and well! When things settle down they hope to
thank you all personally—in the meantime they are
working on getting their lives back together. They
want you to know you are in their prayers.
God Bless you all—
Jim and Maureen Novotny
A BIG THANK YOU
SEWING ANGELS
Our children’s choir have beautiful royal blue
capelets thanks to some special angels. The following gave their time and talents to construct the capelets; Nancy Brejcha, Jeanine Dent, Claire Groppe,
Nancy Herman, Sally Kill, Jean Klotter, Sue Maczak, Nancy Mihel, Susan Parker and her mom,
Mary Pytko, Pat Scafuri, Nadine Trumbull and
Mary Zebert. Thank you very much for making Divine Infant proud!
LET US STRENGTHEN OUR FAITH
TOGETHER
You are welcome to join us as we explore our
faith. Our next meeting is on Monday, April 27 at
7pm in Langan Hall. These meetings are a followup to the presentation of Science Tests Faith. You
do not have to attend every meeting to participate. Come as you are able. If you did not attend
the presentation, we still want you there. We have
as the starting point of our discussion the book Reason to Believe, the personal story of Ron Tesoriero’s
journey for answers. Ron is an Australian lawyer
who is joined in his quest by Mike Willesee, a wellrespected journalist. The two of them and their story
were the inspiration for the Science Tests Faith program. For those who have the book, we will start off
next week with the material that is in chapter 20
through the end of the book. You do not have to
read the book to participate. We will go where the
Holy Spirit leads us. Come when you are able and
help us strengthen our faith here at Divine Infant. Any questions, call me or email me – Pat
Meyers (708)865-0374 – [email protected].

First Grade is currently working on goods
and services in Social Studies. We set up a
classroom store with various products. The
students that made the products are the
“producers” and the ones buying the products are the “consumers.” It also gave them
practice with Math and counting money. The
follow up activity was making a collage showing “producers” and “consumers.”
The 7th grade class enjoyed a field
trip to The Art Institute last
week. They actively participated in
a 1 1/2 hour drawing class in various
galleries. After lunch at the museum, students walked through Millenium Park to check out The Cloud
and the newly opened Maggie Daly
Park. A good time was had by all!
Thanks to Matt Bamford and his family for sending in astronaut ice cream
to school for us to taste. Our science
book spoke of astronauts food and
we all enjoyed the treat! It was
out of this world!
Pictured here are the Divine Infant 8th graders on
their trip to Springfield. While touring our State Capitol, the class of 2015 met with our State Representative, Emanuel “Chris” Welch. Representative Welch
spoke with the students, bought us lunch (!), and
introduced us on the floor of the House! While in
Springfield, the 8th grade also toured the old State
Capitol, Lincoln’s tomb, and the Lincoln Presidential
Museum. It was a great trip!

130 BLOOD DONORS TURN OUT FOR
DRIVE
On Saturday, April 18, 130 area residents
signed up to donate blood at the Westchester
Blood Program’s second drive of the year. That
total was the largest turnout at a local blood drive
since April 2012.
In addition, it bucked a national trend of fewer
and fewer blood donors for our hospitals. In the
last three years, blood donations have dropped by
at least 25 per cent across the U.S..
But the April 18 drive turned the tide, at least
for this area. Those 130 people donated 120 units
(pints) of blood for area hospitals.
The WBP has now collected 226 units for the
year; those units put the Program over the 24,000
plateau since its founding in June 1974, enough to
serve the needs of 70,000 hospital patients.
The Program also extends its sincere thanks
to all of the Divine Infant Family who took part, either as a donor or volunteer.
Another optimistic note coming from the April
18 drive: Among the donors were 19 first-timers.
The next Westchester drive will be on Saturday, July 18, at Divine Providence School.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Many of our customs surrounding critical illness
come from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly
changed. Death was an all‑too-familiar presence
then, and people tended to see it as a natural and
unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe.
People tried to review their lives, settle their affairs,
say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the
deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of
God’s love and forgiveness. What people most
feared was sudden death. It was dreaded and never
discussed.
The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling
images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to
safe pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired our modern
prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from
Roman pagan practice; it was home‑based and
family‑centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death,
but they were terrified by the dead. Christians, on
the other hand, consoled their sick with psalms of
joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was to
assure the sick person of God’s love, and that the
ties that bind the dead and the living would endure.

services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the
chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange
their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these
services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please
call the rectory at 865-8071.
WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest
shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the
desired wedding day.
No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your
wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be
disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another
ceremony.
