Message from the President
Parents & Players,
For those of you who are returning, welcome back. For
those of you who are participating for the first time let me
be the first to welcome you to the SCYFL, I hope you enjoy
your experience and become part of our Dragon family for a
long time. Thank you for trusting us with your child; it is an
honor and a privilege we hold in the highest regard. I am
looking forward to getting started and a fun filled season
of football and cheerleading. I am excited about some of
the improvements and changes we have made for the 2013
season.
For those of you who have been around for a couple of
years know our league motto has been "Win Everyday". For
those of you who are new, this has nothing to do with
winning on the scoreboard but everything to do with
"Winning" in school, in our community and on the field. We
do this by making good grades, giving back to our
community, working as a team and giving 100% every time
we step on the field. If we do this, winning on the
scoreboard will happen!
I still believe this is a great mindset but this year our
motto will slightly change to "United to Win Everyday". I
believe it is important to instill back into this youth league
that we are all Dragons no matter which division or which
team. Our mission is to make fundamentally sound players to
feed up to our middle and high school football programs.
What a better way to do this than to unite them now. With
that said we have too many kids to have just one team so we
will unite through practice, community involvement and
youth league functions.
Let me take a minute to introduce to you a few new changes
this year. The SCYFL is now a member of USA Football.
This is an investment in the safety of our players. This is
exciting for me as this is a tool that all of our parents and
coaches can utilize during both the season and off season.
USA football focuses on heads up tackling and player
safety. We will have a group of people who will be trained to
the standards of USA Football and the NFL on concussion
awareness, proper procedures and practicing methods. Each
coach will be certified by USA football before he or she
can step on the field.
The 2013 season will be our first "Mighty Mites" season.
Mighty Mites is designed for our 1st & 2nd grade
players and will prepare them for pee-wee football. This
division like all others is not focused on winning and
losing on the scoreboard. We want to teach sound
fundamentals and love for the game. This should be fun
to watch!
Another change to this season is game day location.
While our football field at the park is being renovated
we will play our home games at Silver Creek High School
this year. There will be a $2 per adult and $1 per child
admission fee and as with all other teams in our
conference players and coaches are free.
Probably the most notable change this year will be the
way our teams are structured in the Pee-Wee and
Junior Divisions. This year to promote the united one
team concept, both Pee-Wee and Junior teams will be
coached by the same coaching staff. All players in each
division will practice together. Having the same coaches
will result in the same message being delivered and the
same instruction given to all players. This concept will
hopefully keep our Dragon team more united. With the
number of players we will still have two teams for game
days. This will allow for more playing time.
In an effort to give back to our community and teach
our players and cheerleaders the importance of
community involvement our 6th Annual SCYFL Pool Party
on July 27th will benefit the Kids of Kingsfield.
Kingsfield is a children's home in Sellersburg. We will
ask all families to bring non-perishable food items for
admission. More information will be provided as we get
closer to the date.
I would like to take a minute and thank our sponsors.
Without our sponsors we couldn't operate this league
with the great tools and equipment we are able to
provide. Please help us support the companies who
support us!
Lastly, take a minute to like our Facebook page, follow
us on twitter or visit our newly developed website. We
post many league messages on social media. If you are
not on twitter you can simply text “Follow
SCYFLDragons” to 40404 to receive text alerts.
Again, I look forward to a great season and if you have
any questions please do not hesitate to let me know.
