FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Idiom
An idiom is an expression whose meaning has little
or nothing, to do with the literal meaning of the
words.
 Threatening the bully in the neighborhood is really playing with fire.
 My sister didn’t go to school today because she is as sick as a dog.
 It’s been a long day, and now it’s time to hit the hay.

Simile
A simile is a figure of speech in which two unlike things
are compared
Similes are a way to describe something. Authors use them to make their writing
more interesting or entertaining.
Similes use LIKE or AS in the comparison.
 Playing chess with Ashley is like trying to outsmart a computer.


His temper was as explosive as a volcano.
I walked along the beach and listened to the ocean. My sadness was
as unending as the waves.

Hyperbole (hi

A Hyperbole is a figure of speech which is an
exaggeration.
It is used to add voice and humor to your writing.
I nearly died laughing when I heard his joke.
I tried a thousand times to get it right.
His feet were as big as a barge. (What else is this an example of?)

Alliteration – Repetition of the initial (or beginning)
sounds of a word.
In the middle of the room, he hid himself from view.
The shiny, silver, smooth sash glimmered in the candlelight.

Metaphor – An implied comparison between two
usually unrelated things indicating a likeness or
analogy between both things.
Does NOT use LIKE or AS.


Life is a roller coaster – sometimes it moves fast, sometimes it
moves slow and there are sharp turns and drops along the way.
Words are bullets, and should be used sparingly, aimed toward a
target.

Personification – giving of human characteristics to
inanimate objects

The ancient car groaned into third gear.

The cloud scattered rain throughout the city.


word/idea.

