Capitalization
Rule 1: Capitalize the first word of a sentence, the pronoun I in any location and a
person’s name. Example: Tim Jackson bought a computer, and I learned how to use it.
Rule 2: Capitalize the first word in a quotation.
Example: Mr. Marsh exclaimed, “Let’s do the best we can!”
Rule 3: Capitalize the first word and all titles and nouns in the salutation of a letter. A
comma should also be placed at the end of each.
Example: Dear Miranda,
Sincerely yours,
Very truly yours,
Rule 4: Capitalize the names of the days of the week, special days (holidays), and
months of the years
Example: Tuesday

Rule 5: When abbreviating states, both letters should be capitalized.
Example: TX
AZ
MO
Rule 6: Capitalize the name brand but not the generic product’s name.
Example. Hostess Twinkies snacks
Lava soap
Mercedes-Benz cars
Reebok tennis shoes
Wonder bread
Apple personal computers
Rule 7: Capitalize the names of streets, cities, businesses and buildings and school
subjects.
Example. Dr. Ralph H. Poteet High School 3300 Poteet Drive
