Sutton Hoo
The Spirit of
Discover Sutton Hoo for yourself
On the eve of the Second World War archaeologists discovered
one of the greatest treasures ever found in Britain. It had lain
undisturbed for 1300 years and changed the way we think about
our ancestors. It was the ultimate discovery, the ship burial of an
Anglo-Saxon king and his most treasured possessions.
Today, you can walk in the footsteps of royalty and visit the
atmospheric burial mounds where the treasure was found. In the
exhibition, you can discover how beautiful objects, like the famous
helmet and the exquisite gold jewellery, were made and used. The
centre piece is a full size replica of the burial chamber, giving a
profound impression of how important this man was. He is thought
to be the great Saxon King, Raedwald, who died in
about AD625.
Whatever time of the year you come to Sutton Hoo, you’ll find it
a magical place. Located on a hill above the river Deben, you can
understand how the Anglo-Saxon kings believed the site to be of
great significance and a statement of their power.
This importance was not recognised until 1939, when the owner of
Tranmer House, the redoubtable Mrs Pretty, decided to investigate.
With the help of local archaeologist, Basil Brown, she uncovered the
Sutton Hoo treasure.
Sutton Hoo today is a celebration of this amazing
discovery and the history it revealed. The story is told in the
award- winning exhibition and through our guided tours, guide
book, family activities, costumed characters and exciting
events programme. The estate is a rare example of sandling
heath and home to many distinctive plants and animals. The
waymarked walks explore this beautiful and historic landscape
and take in many fine views of Woodbridge and the river Deben,
views which have inspired artists such as John Constable and
Thomas Churchyard.
To help you enjoy your day, we have a superb restaurant serving
tasty home-made dishes and a gift shop selling quality products.
Alternatively, if you want to stay for longer, why don’t you consider
one of our beautiful holiday cottages, located in Tranmer House.
These afford stunning views over the estate and are ideal for
exploring the Suffolk coasts and heaths and the attractive towns of
Woodbridge, Framlingham, Aldeburgh and Southwold (see www.
nationaltrustcottages.co.uk for more information).
Welcome to the Feast
This year’s exhibition explores the themes of feasting
and celebration and looks at how the great AngloSaxon kings would have entertained in the royal hall.
Find out about the gifts they would have given, the
role of women and the bad behaviour! Compare
Anglo-Saxon feasting with Roman dining and modern
state banquets. If you want to discover more about Anglo-Saxon
food and celebration, come to Sutton Hoo when Ormsgard are
recreating Anglo-Saxon life or visit our superb Sutton Hoo through
the Ages event. Alternatively, join Time Team expert, Sam Newton
for his fascinating lecture lunches on celebration and feasting.
We look forward to sharing the magic with you.
Look out for…
