Corunna Public Schools’ focuses on the whole child. Part of what we do every day is to make sure we recognize those students who do “a little more” than what’s expected. Here are some samples of our “GREAT” students!!! Tabitha McGhee Mrs. Dettman said, “Reading is a lifelong skill that we hope all students will come to enjoy. Therefore, at CMS we challenge our students to read at least 40 books by the end of the school year. In order to become a member of our Reading Hall of Fame, students will spend hours and hours reading. It is my honor to congratulate Tabby for meeting this goal!” Gavon Conner Mrs. Rawlins stated, “I was coming out of the office with my hands full. Gavon was walking with a friend, but noticed my struggle and stopped to open the door for me. As always, he had a big smile on his face as he did this. I love Gavon’s positive attitude and seeing his smile every day at school!” Jacob Bowen Mrs. Dettman said, “The sixth graders at CMS are given the challenge to attempt to read 40 books by the end of the school year. Many achieve this goal early and go on to read more books than they ever dreamed possible. It is my honor to congratulate Jacob for meeting this goal!!” Kai Tenorio Mrs. Dettman reported, “You have spent many hours reading. I appreciate your hard work and realize the dedication it takes to meet such a rigorous goal. Keep up the great work! I can’t wait to see how many books you will read this year.” Farmers for a Day First graders at Elsa Meyer in the classroom of Mrs. TerMeer had a very special visitor recently. Mr. Tim Brooks, local farmer and owner of the greenhouse, Farmer's Garden on Hibbard Road, shared his expertise with the students about seeds and planting season. The students have begun a unit on life cycles. The first life cycle they studied was that of a seed. Mr. Brooks brought many flowers for the students to investigate, a variety of seeds to inspect and a classroom garden. The class garden gives the students the opportunity to watch as the seed sprouts, grows roots and more. The students will move on to the life cycle of a butterfly as soon as the butterfly larva arrive. This community/ school partnership is just another example of why it’s “Great to be Gold.” Daddy Daughter Dance 2015 Every little girl is her daddy’s “Little Princess”. Dads and their daughters spent the evening of May 7th at Rollhaven in Owosso participating in the annual Daddy Daughter Dance. The event was a great opportunity to fine tune dance moves and waltz the night away. This is an annual May event between the Corunna Public Schools and Rollhaven. As evidenced here, the couples had a great time and made many special memories. This is just another reason why it’s “Great to be Gold!” STEM-- Properties of Flight Nellie Reed students had an opportunity to take their learning outside and let their imaginations soar... literally. In their STEM class, students learned about the basic properties of flight and were able to put this new knowledge to the test with kites and paper planes that the students built (mostly) themselves. After building and decorating, students were able to fly their creations outside on the playground. Student were then able to take their kites and planes home to continue the learning experience. This is just another example of why it’s “Great to be Gold!” Corunna Students Are In Step Ellie Trudeau Mrs. Rivette shared, “Ellie has been working so hard this year in every area! She always comes to school with a smile on her face and is willing to help where needed! Great job Ellie!!” Zach Worthington Mrs. Mathias said, “Zach has worked so hard recently. Classwork is done well and he is participating more than anyone else. He is so positive, it is infectious. I’m very proud of him.” Jaden Moiles Mrs. Rivette stated, “Jaden has shown great improvement in completing tasks and putting forth the extra effort to make sure his work is done! Great Job Jaden!” Students in third through eighth and eleventh grade at Corunna Public Schools are right in the middle of M-STEP testing. The state assessment, formerly known as the MEAP, is now being given as an online assessment in the spring. The state has set the testing schedule and students at CPS are working hard to complete their testing. Students in fifth and eighth grade have already finished their math, English language arts, and social studies assessments. Fourth and seventh graders are right in the middle of their English language arts, math, and science testing. In the coming weeks third, sixth, and eleventh graders will take similar assessments. This is the first year that the state has offered the assessment in an on-line format and the students and staff members seem to be excited about the changes. The students are taking their time and working hard, while the staff members are working together to ensure the students have the opportunities and flexibility they need to continue learning in the classroom, while also having enough time to finish their assessments. Individual student results will be made available in the fall when the district receives them. Calendar Erica SliwayMrs. Dettman said, “C ongratulations, Erica!!! You are the newest member of the 40 Book Hall of Fame. I appreciate your hard work and realize the dedication it takes to meet such a rigorous goal.” On Sale Now!
