Phase 3 and 4 Phonics PHASE 3 PHONICS In Phase 3 children will be able to: • Children are ready to blend and segment • Children learn 25 new graphemes • Children will learn 12 new tricky words • Children will also learn the letter names Segment – splitting words into the individual sounds Blend – putting the individual sounds into one word PHASE 3 DIGRAPHS AND TRICKY WORDS j, v, w, x, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, or, ar, oi, ow, er, ur, ear, ure, air he, she, we, me, be, was, you, they, are, all, my, her SENTENCE EXAMPLE I can run to the park. PHASE 4 PHONICS The main aim of this Phase is to consolidate children’s knowledge In Phase 4 children will be able to: • There are no new graphemes to learn • Children will be able to read simple two syllable words (sandwich) • They will be able to read simple sentences and captions • Able to recognise and write tricky words • Children will learn 14 new tricky words to read PHASE 4 PHONICS CONTINUED… Adjacent consonants – what are they? st – start mp – damp br – brush gr – grip We sometimes call these CVCC/CCVC/CVCCC/CCVCC words PHASE 4 TRICKY WORDS Said, have, like, so, do, come, some, were, there, little, one, when, out, what SENTENCE EXAMPLE My damp tent smells as bad as a mad skunk. Revisit/Review Practise previously learned letters or graphemes Quick write phonemes Concentrates on phonemes/graphemes that children are not 100% sure of Flashcard all known/write known phonemes HOW DO WE TEACH IT AT SCHOOL CONT… Teach New graphemes (in Phase 4 teaching how to read CCVC words) One or two new tricky words Spell tricky words from Phase 3 Teach the new sound oo. Introduce the sound and action.
