Phase 3 and 4 Phonics
PHASE 3 PHONICS
In Phase 3 children will be able to:
• Children are ready to blend and segment
• Children learn 25 new graphemes
• Children will learn 12 new tricky words
• Children will also learn the letter names
Segment – splitting words into the individual sounds
Blend – putting the individual sounds into one word
PHASE 3 DIGRAPHS AND TRICKY

PHASE 4 PHONICS
The main aim of this Phase is to consolidate children’s knowledge
In Phase 4 children will be able to:
• There are no new graphemes to learn
• Children will be able to read simple two syllable words (sandwich)
• They will be able to read simple sentences and captions
• Able to recognise and write tricky words
• Children will learn 14 new tricky words to read

Adjacent consonants – what are they?

gr – grip
We sometimes call these CVCC/CCVC/CVCCC/CCVCC words
