Department Highlight ‐ 50+ Wellness Program • The 50+ Wellness program was selected as a recipient of the Living Every Day (ALED) Instructor Training program through the National Recreation and Parks Association. Two Spartanburg Council on Aging staff members will be trained to lead this evidence based program that provides a step‐by‐step plan for building a healthier lifestyle for sedentary adults aged 50+. Participants will participate in a 12‐week program that helps them finds ways to become more active and enjoy physical activity based on their preferences, life‐
styles, and routines. • Every year, the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) honors outstanding efforts made by senior cen‐
ters / programs across the nation that offer innovative, creative, and replicable programs for older adults. The 50+ Wellness program’s Senior Enrichment Day was awarded first place in the Special Events category for 2016. Senior Enrichment Day is a one day conference offering older adults the opportunity to enrich their lives through interactive workshops such as brain games, dementia, fitness, nutrition, senior sports, crafts, safety, and many more. This free event is possible with the assistance of many partners throughout the county. • Christmas in Action has joined forces with the Spartanburg Council on Aging program to provide minor home repair / modification assistance through the grant funds made possible by the SC Lt. Governor’s Of‐
fice. This program assists eligible persons with the cost of minor, safety‐related home repairs so that they may continue to live independently in their homes for as long as possible. We were honored to be asked to join the Town of Cowpens as they were featured on WSPA’s Hometown Spotlight in January. Kristie Oliver was given the opportunity to speak about the many offerings at the Timken Community Center. 50 + Wellness More programming and sites to serve County residents in 2017!
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America and in Spartanburg County. In addition to our offer‐
ings in Inman, Pacolet, and Cowpens, you can now play at the Woodruff Leisure Center on Monday mornings and evenings. Coming in March, Pickleball 101 will be offered for free thanks to a partnership with Upstate Pickleball. This class will meet once a week to teach players basic rules, court etiquette, tips and tricks of the game, and provide a general overview of how to play Pickleball. During the weekend of January 28th and 29th, the Spartanburg County Parks Department served as host to Carolina Football Club’s “Carolina Spring Classic Tournament”. The event took place at Old Canaan Road Park and CFC Soccer Complex. Nearly 80 teams participated in this tournament . Mountain Bike Trail at Holston Creek Park Under Construction
