Instructions: Creating Color Foci for Caret • Create an Excel sheet. o Save the Excel Sheet File → save as → • File name → make sure to enter “.foci” after the title • Save as type → CSV (Comma delimited) • The beginning of the Excel sheet should always begin with the following information: CSVF-FILE csvf-section-start Header tag Value caret-version v5.612 comment [insert comment] date [insert correct date] encoding COMMA_SEPARATED_VALUE_FILE csvf-section-end header csvf-section-start Cells • [insert the total number of columns] The 10th row should include the column names o Required categories to include: Cell #, Name (Author), X, Y, Z coordinates, Journal (including year) o Categories for a more comprehensive data set (in addition to the previously stated): Class Name (description of study), PubMed ID, # of subjects, table #, page # (where data is found in the journal), geography (area of brain), statistic, Brodmann's Area (BA), size, Atlas (MNI or Talairach) Here is an example of a recommended system: o Cell # • • • • PubMed ID Table # Page # Journal w/ Year Name Class Name X Y Z After adding the correct information into the cells: o "csvf-section-end” should be added to the last row in Column A o “Cells” should be added to the last row in Column B Make sure to save your work! Here is an example of what the final product will look like: Create a 2nd Excel sheet. o Save the Excel Sheet File → save as → • File name → make sure to enter in “.focicolor” after the title • IMPORTANT: the entire file name should be in quotation marks • Save as type → CSV (Comma delimited) This is an example of what it should look like: Geography • The beginning of the Excel sheet should always begin with the following information: • The “Name” column should contain the “Name” and “Class Name” information from your foci document o Copy and paste the author names from the 1st Excel sheet o Below the last pasted author name, copy and paste the class names from the 1st Excel sheet o Highlight all of the newly pasted data Data → Remove Duplicates → Continue with the current selection → Remove Duplicates → OK → OK • • • • • • • Add “csvf-section-end” to the last row in Column A (just as you did in the 1st Excel document) Add “colors” to the last row in Column B The following values should be entered for all values o Point-Size: 255 o Line-Size: 2 o Symbol: 1 For each of the Authors entered: choose the colors you would like o Caret → Layers → Foci →Edit Foci Colors → click “New Color” → Name the new color → shift the Red, Green, and Blue bars to create your desired colors To save your colors: o File → save data file → change to desired name, file type should be “Area Color File (*.areacolor) → “Would you like to create a Spec File”→ No Now match the colors you made in Caret to the values in the CSV sheet o Helpful hint: create different colors for each author and use the same color for each category Thus, if you have “Logical Reasoning” coordinates and “Numerical Reasoning” coordinates they category will have two distinct colors This should be what a completed Color Foci File should look like: • First, make sure to open a Spec File o Now you are finally able to upload the foci into Caret File → Open Data File → select the .focicolor file you just created → open → yes File → Open Data File → select the .foci file you just created → open → yes Click on the “Spec” button → Foci → Click on the “open” buttons for the files you just uploaded → append Click on “D/C” (note: this stands for Display/Control) →under “Page Selection: Overlay/Underlay – Surface” check the “Foci” box to display the uploaded Foci Go back to “Page Selection” and click the box down to “Foci Main” to adjust the symbol, foci size and if you want the foci to be colored by class or author Notes: • Foci Class: Allows you to deselect specific foci from class names being displayed • Foci Color: Allows you to deselect certain color assignments from being displayed • Foci Name: Allows you to deselect certain authors from being displayed • Foci Search: Allows you to search for unions and intersections of foci
