Sustainability labels
The caterer on the TU/e-campus uses the following sustainability labels.
Environmental friendly
The European organic label indicates that the product is in compliance with the EU rules on
organic farming.
The EKO label indicates that the product comes from organic farming. No chemical pesticides
and fertilizers were used. Farmers do not use genetically modified seeds and follow an animal
friendly process.
Milieukeur includes the efficient use of raw materials, reducing the use of energy and water and
reducing emissions to air, soil and water. A sustainable approach for the use of packaging and
waste are required and there are criteria for nature conservation. The label does not limit itself
to environment. Additionally there are criteria to improve animal health and welfare and more
and more schedules for working conditions have been added.
Fairfood
Fairtrade-Max Havelaar is a label for fair trade. The label guarantees that products meet the fair
trade standards. Farmers and growers received a fair wage and their rights and health have
been taken well care of. The label can be found on coffee, tea, chocolate, fruit, drinks and other
products from third World countries. The label also takes environmental aspects into account.
RFA Rainforest Alliance is a label for fair trade and environment for products from areas where
rainforest grows. An important criterium is to protect the rainforests and the wellbeing and
income of workers. The Rainforest Alliance label can be found on bananas, tropical fruits,
cacao, coffee and tea.
UTZC UTZ Certified is a fair trade label. The label can be found on coffee, tea and chocolate
from farmers that care about human and environment. For example they use less pesticides
and guarantee good working conditions for their employees.

Animal welfare
The Animal Protection has developed a label to support animal friendly products. These
products get the “Beter Leven”(Better Life) and 1-star label. This means that there is take
account of animal welfare in the production of products.

account of animal welfare in the production of products then by the 1-star label, but not so
much as by the 3-star label.

friendly and the products are organic.
The Marine Stewardship Council-label (MSC) can be found on seafood coming from
sustainable fisheries. In sustainable fisheries the fish stocks are controlled to minimize damage
to the marine life and little extra catch is guaranteed.
CPE Scharrel is a label in the field of animal welfare that can only be found on eggs. The CPEeggs come from hens that live in free barns with litter on the ground.
The VISwijzer shows that the WWF and the North sea Foundations support this product as a
good choice with eye for nature and environment. In the VISwijzer 3 categories are available:
“excellent choice”, “second choice” and “rather not” (VISwijzer green, orange and red
category). The rating varies by species and region of origin, and is reviewed annually.
