Allow Students to Review Quizzes in D2L Overview: By default when students submit a quiz attempt in D2L they receive only a numeric grade as feedback, such as 8/10 (provided Automatic Grading is enabled for the quiz). However, it is possible to allow students to view the questions, their answers, and possibly even an answer key for their past quiz attempts for review and study purposes. The review can be set to appear at the time of quiz submission or after a set date. Known Issues: Currently it is only possible for a student to review their past quiz attempts while a quiz is open. If a quiz is set to Inactive status or it has passed its End Date then previous submissions for that quiz are no longer visible to a student. This can pose a problem. When a past quiz is reopened for review a student who had not previously attempted the quiz could potentially use the opportunity to take the quiz. For ways of preventing this see the section titled “Workarounds” below. Steps to allow reviewing quizzes: To allow students to review a quiz go to the course within D2L and follow the steps below. 1. Click on Quizzes in the course navbar. 2. On the next page, click on the quiz name you want to open for review. 3. On the resulting Edit Quiz page click on the Submission Views tab. 4. On the Submission Views tab there are two options. a. Click on the “Default View” link to allow the quiz to be open for review immediately after submission. b. Click on the “Add Additional View” button to make it available after a set date. 5. On the next page, if adding an additional view, provide a name for the view and use the date fields within the View Restrictions area to set the date the view will become available. 6. Under View Details click on “Yes” to allow students to see questions, then choose from the options below to decide which questions will be made available to the students. Additionally by checking “Show question answers” an answer key can be made available to students. Lastly it is possible to allow students to see the class average and grade distribution for the quiz. 7. Click the Save button. How Students Access the Review: To access a quiz for review a student needs to go to the quiz section in D2L and click on the downwardpointing arrow next to the quiz name to reveal the pop-down menu and select “Submissions.” Next the student should click on the submission attempt they wish to review. Workarounds: Reopening a previously closed quiz for review creates the possibility that students who have not used their permitted number of attempts may try to retake the quiz. There are several ways to avoid this situation. These are listed below in order of increasing thoroughness and difficulty. A. If the quiz is attached to a grade item, go to the Assessment tab, deselect the item from the Grade Item pull down menu, and uncheck “Auto Export to Grades.” This will not stop a student from retaking the quiz, but any additional quiz attempts will not be recorded in the grade book. B. Go to the Restrictions tab. In the “Optional Advanced Restrictions” section (you may need to click “Expand optional advanced restrictions” if no fields are apparent) set a password or change the password if one is already set. In this instance a student will not be able to retake the quiz since they will not know the correct password. C. Go to the Restrictions tab. In the “Additional Release Conditions” section create a release condition that only applies to students who have taken the quiz the full number of times. To do this follow these steps: i) ii) Click on the “Create and Attach” button. On the resulting window choose “Completed Quiz Attempt” from the Quiz section of the Condition Type pull-down menu. iii) iv) Select the quiz from the “Quiz” pull down menu. Set the number of attempts. v) vi) Click the “Create” button. On the main page remember to click the “Save” or “Save and Close” button.
