Cambridge Elementary Lil’ Indians Volume VI, Issue 1 Mr. Flint’s 6th Grade October, 2016 By Lexi Alpy, 6th Grade In Mr.Flint`s sixth grade social studies class we have been studying different artifacts. The artifacts dated back to the 1800s. The objects we looked at ranged from early entertainment devices to a large wooden stick. In this lab we learned about the people from long ago, and learned about the lifestyles of people before us. We also have been studying cave paintings. We did paintings with water colors on small pieces of slate. You may notice that if you look at the paintings there are no trees, clouds, the sun, rivers, campfires, and a few other things. This is because we did not include anything the people long ago did not include, and archeologists have never discovered any cave paintings with those objects. By Mrs. Whitman’s 2nd Grade Class Mr. Howard Romack visited the second grade classes. He taught us about how plants and animals get ready for winter. Mr. Romack brought along some live animals to show us. We saw turtles, frogs, snakes, insects, and salamanders. We went to the playground and discovered our flower beds and maple trees were great places to study plant changes. Do you know why leaves change color? Why do some animals migrate, hibernate or stay for the winter? The next time you see Mr. Romack, ask him! Thank you, Mr. Romack! Sadie McMillan, 2nd Grade, makes a new friend! My Trip to North Carolina By Isaac Olvera, 6th Grade Have you ever been on an exciting vacation? Well, I have, and I’m going to tell you all about it. Over summer break, I went to North Carolina. The beach’s sand was white and fluffy. I was stung by a jellyfish, but the vacation overall was good. I went to a place that was an aquarium and a zoo. There were birds, snakes, fish, and even an albino crocodile! I also went to see a battleship. I saw its missiles, engines, guns, and tons more. It was so exciting! That was my awesome vacation. Alison McLenithan’s rocket pencildived, and her parachute lit on fire! Lil’ Indians The Library By Gavin Krizan, 5th Grade The library is a place with lots of books. It has graphic novels, world records, and even chapter books. You can use the computers to write stories and articles. The library teacher is Mrs. Cummings, and she teaches you a lesson each time you come. Thank you for reading about the library! Thank you, PTP! Recently, the PTP purchased new playground kick-balls, soccer balls, and footballs for all the grade levels and character education shirts for the staff. Many CCS assemblies and Arts In Education field trips are funded partly by the PTP. Thank you to the PTP and to Mrs. Blanchfield for working tirelessly to improve CCS for our staff and students! Reading Time By Kateri Murphy, 6th Grade I asked Cambridge staff and students what types of books they enjoy. The least favorite type of book to read is a tie between non-fiction, history, and science fiction. Fiction was a close second least favorite. James Toleman said he “doesn’t enjoy fiction because it’s not interesting and it’s unrealistic.” Music Notes The students in Mrs. Chadwick's and Mrs. Smith's music classes are studying music from Latin America in preparation for the Alex Torres Orchestra performance. The Elementary Band is working on the piece 'Guantanamera'. The Elementary students are studying the cha-cha and merengue as well music from the Alex Torres Orchestra. A surprising second favorite was sports books. Jacey Nieckarz sais she enjoys sport books because she’s “familiar with the topic.” I thought Sports books would be the favorite, but it wasn’t. Now, what we have all been waiting for...Cambridge’s favorite type of book to read…..it is MYSTERY! Mystery is Cassidy Hurley’s favorite type “because it has suspense and is always interesting!” Volume VI, Issue 1 5 Beginner Elementary Band is about to start. Please make sure all permission forms are turned in to Mrs. Smith! Page 4 4th Grade News Introducing Corey Papik! Corey is in 4th Grade. He just moved to Cambridge from East Northport, Long Island. She has been doing gymnastics her whole life, and she is on the USA gymnastics team. Do you have a sport you really like? Volume VI, Issue 1 5 Henry Snider Visits Mount Adams By Elliot Byer, 4th Grade Have you ever wondered what happens on Mt. Adams? It is really cold up on top of the mountain. “There are many obstacles on the trail that make it harder to climb the mountain,” says Henry Snider. It took him and his mom and dad four hours to get to the top. His mom burnt the noodles on the first night. Henry had two days of experience on the steep mountain. “On the second night, we had eight-monthold pepperoni and cheese and crackers,” he said. The pepperoni was “still good.” So that is how Henry and his parents climbed Mount Adams! Page 5 Mrs. Smith’s Room By Sarah Foyle and Elizabeth Lauver, 4th Grade There’s exciting news in Room 52! We have a class pet named Rosie. She is a guinea pig. Rosie lives in a big cage that has her food and a guinea pig igloo. Our teacher calls it a pigloo! We clean Rosie’s cage every other day. Rosie eats guinea pig pellets, sweet grass, and fruit and vegetable scraps that we give her. Rosie’s fur is soft. Rosie uses her senses like we do. We also have crayfish. Our crayfish live in a gray bin with upside-down flower pots to hide in. We have to put sand at the bottom. The crayfish molt. We had to do an experiment to see what crayfish eat, but we still are not positive. Crayfish shells are hard. Crayfish use their antennae to sense things. We love having class pets! Do you have any? Recycling By Emily Lathrop, 5th Grade Do you like to get up in the morning, look out the window, see the wet grass with nature all around? Listen to the birds chirping? Watch birds soar and smell the clean damp earth, and see the beautiful colors of nature? I know I do, but we could lose all of these beautiful things about our earth, all because people don’t recycle. So, if you don’t want to get up in the morning and see nothing flying, look at brown grass and leaves, and smell nothing but garbage and gasses, then recycle! So, spread the word. Tell a family member or a close friend., and start recycling today. Fun Facts about Recycling Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours. Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. Recycling a stack of newspaper just 3 feet high saves one tree. Volume VI, Issue 1 5 Page 6 Sports Center Cambridge Tigers Vs. Poultney By Kadyn MacNeil and Alex Luke, 6th Grade The hardest game of the season for the Cambridge Tigers—a home game! Cambridge Tigers kicked the ball off to the Poultney Vipers. Cambridge Tigers defense stopped Poultney 4th and 13, and they punted the ball back to the Cambridge Tigers. The Cambridge Tigers quarterback Kadyn Macneil handed the ball to Isaiah Johnson. The next play, Isaiah scored a touchdown! Isaac Olvera made a great kick-off. The Vipers got stopped at the 23 yard line. Then Alex Luke did an end around and got helmet to helmet contact by 42, but the ref didn’t call the penalty! The next play, the Tigers scored. The final score of the game was 33 to 12 Cambridge Tigers! Cambridge Wildcats 2016 By Hailey Shaw, 6th Grade The Cambridge Wilcats were on a roll this season until the first competition against Colonie Pop Warner. There were only two teams, Cambridge and Colonie. Cambridge lost the first competition, but got a trophy for second place. We dropped a girl during the competition. Our final score was 38.42 and Colonie’s score was 52.38. Wildcats practiced three times a week. When it was time for the next competition, Cambridge got beat by Colonie again and lost! At the last competition, a girl popped her arm out of place, and then Cambridge was up next! The competition was on! Colonie won again, and the Wildcats lost! We tried, and did way better than we have done at any competition before - second place, but it was fun! Volume VI, Issue 1 5 PE News By Mrs. Phillips and Mr. I Welcome back all! Irish Step Dancing By Neve Marotta, 4th Grade Have you ever wondered what Irish Step Dancing is like? Well, if you have, then this is your lucky day! I started taking Irish Step last September. Here are some things we do in class. Last year, for the show, we got organized from the shortest in the middle to the tallest on both sides. You could do any step of the Beginning Jig. You and the person on the other side who was the same height as you would have to agree on which step to do. This year, we are learning a dance called the Tow Hand Reel. You stand with your partner and cross your arms so that the taller person’s arms are on top of yours. Then, you do two hop-twothrees at a time in a square. Then the taller person spins you. Next, you do the same thing again but this time the other person swings you around so that you are facing them. You end in a clasp. Well, we’ll see you next time in the Lil’ Indians Newspaper! Student Council By Daniella Mauro, 5th Grade Have you guys ever wondered what happens in Student Council? Well, I’m here to tell you. We do things like food drives and try to save money. Other things we do are to put up decorations for special occasions, for example, Spirit Week. Those are some things we do in Student Council. I hope you liked it! Cambridge Kids Can!
