the Games

Before you leave home, stuff a folder with copies of these printables for the road. Bring along some
pens and pencils, and you’ll keep your crew well-occupied for hours!
1. How many words can you make out of the phrase . . . ?
Look for a phrase on a billboard with several words, such as, “Mike Warden has a Chevy deal for You!”
Copy the words on the top line. Set a time limit (such as 10 minutes) in which everyone tries to make
as many words as possible from the letters in the copied phrase.

2. Coordinates
(For 2 players) Players keep their papers hidden from each other. One player draws a picture or design
on a grid. She then instructs the other player in copying the picture or design by giving directions in
this way: “Start at the intersection of C and 12. Go west on 12 for 3 blocks. Go north on 9 for 1 block.”
When one continuous line is finished, the player can say, “Park. Now start at the corner of B and 4, etc.”
When all the directions are given, players compare grids. The goal is for the grids to match exactly!
Then the other player draws a picture or design and gives the other player directions.

3. Classic Road Trip Bingo
Have everyone create his or her own bingo board by writing or drawing each item on the checklist in
a separate box. To play, simply look out the windows, and when you see it, you can mark it. Five in a
row in any direction wins! Small pieces of torn paper work for space markers.

4. Listen to My Picture
One player draws a picture in a box, keeping it hidden from everyone else. When she is finished, she
verbally instructs everyone else on how to draw the same picture, keeping her picture hidden. For
example, she might say, “Draw a fence across the middle of the box. Draw a cow on the left side. Draw
a tree on the upper right side. Draw flowers along the fence, etc.” When complete, everyone compares
their drawings to the original to see how alike and different they are.

5. Trips Gone Crazy (page 1)
DON’T read the sentences on page 2 ahead of time! Designate a scribe to fill in the blanks on the word
list below by asking each person in the car, in turn (including himself), to provide the specified words.
Encourage creative responses! When the chart is complete, the scribe reads the sentences on page 2
aloud, filling in the blanks with the corresponding numbered word.
