James Silverman present his charagter Sidney, the night watchman, as comically incompetent.
For example, when walking the perimeter of the cemetery he allowed the grave robbers to slip
through the fenceAs Sidney walks along with his “flashlight trembling in his hand, he closes his
eyes at each sound and mutters “no ghost, no ghost, no ghost” p. 26. The irony, of course, is that
there are no ghosts, instead, it are the grave robbers that he is hired to guard against. You see this
is not the only incident of ironic bumbling that Silverman used to show Sidney’s incompetence.
Sidney actually assists the grave robbers at one point when they arriv posing as UPS workers. I
think one of the clearest example is when the attractive, female graverobber drives up in the UPS
truck, “Sidney, fumbling for words, holding his ponderous stomach in, and trying to straighten
his generally ruffled uniform[…] loads the artifacts without question [while] smiling at her”. (77)
Again, Silvermen demonstrates with comic irony Sidneys ineptitude as he surrenders his
attention and the valuable artifacts to a pretty face. You see similar actions continue throughout
the novel, making Sidney an endearing, yet comically incompitent character.
