Yellowstone County also has the highest percentage of military veterans in the state. Yellowstone County includes the cities of Billings, Laurel, and Broadview. Billings, the county seat, is the state's largest city with an estimated population of 105, 845 (2009) and is a major retail and wholesale trade, financial, energy, transportation, education, and medical center hub. According to the Montana Almanac, by authors Andrea Merrill and Judy Jacobson, the county was established in 1883. The Yellowstone River, the authors say, was called Roche Jaune which means "yellow rock" by early French trappers. Pompeys Pillar, an area landmark, was originally called Pompy's Tower by Captain William Clark. The authors add he named it after Sacajawea's son Baptiste, whom he called "Little Pomp." Billings was named for lawyer, philanthropist and former Northern Pacific Railroad President Frederick Billings. The original County offices were housed in a log building, which was destroyed by fire in 1886. They were then housed in a building on 27th and 1st Avenue North until 1905, when the 3rd County Courthouse was dedicated. On September 12, 1956 construction began on our current County Courthouse. It was dedicated on June 20, 1958. The county is 2,666 square miles in area, 2,635 square miles in land area, and 31 miles in inland water area. According to the Montana Department of Commerce, median income for Yellowstone County households is an estimated $45,277. As you will find, there are a myriad of sights to see in Yellowstone County. Check out historic spots such as Pompeys Pillar, Pictograph Cave, and Sacrifice Cliff, to name a few. There are numerous museums, parks, recreational areas, and Zoo Montana for your enjoyment. Yellowstone County is also proud to be the home of the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery, which was established in 2008. Over 20% of Montana‟s military veterans reside in Yellowstone County. This cemetery is a culmination of a dream, generosity, determination, and perseverance of our veterans and citizens of Yellowstone County. There are so many reasons Yellowstone County is appealing— from our resilient economy, opportunities for higher education, arts, culture, and recreational fun. Once here, you‟ll stay for the vibrant energy, the warmth of our people, beautiful scenery, and more!
