Course Goals
1 Write Narrative and Descriptive Pieces
Students will complete the writing process for narrative and descriptive pieces.
2 Improve Voice and Organization
Students will improve voice and organization through practice and detailed feedback from instructors.
Course Topics
1 Narrative Technique
Students will develop skill writing details and description that bring stories to life.
2 Active and Passive Voice
Students will write in the active voice and will learn to avoid using the passive voice in all forms of writing. They will use
strong, direct sentence structure.
3 Genre and Literary Devices
Students will practice writing and interpreting literary devices including metaphor, simile, hyperbole, imagery,
alliteration, and onomatopoeia. They will apply these devices to various literary genres.
4 Diction
Students will develop strong vocabulary and improve the word selection in their writing. They will apply techniques for
strong writing dictated by The Elements of Style.
