January 22 2017 - MOTHER OF SORROWS CHURCH

MOTHER OF SORROWS CHURCH
Our Mission is to form disciples of Jesus Christ in the image of our Mother of Sorrows.
Like Mary, standing at the foot of the Cross, we stand by one another with deep
compassion by reaching out to share the joys and sorrows of daily life in our
homes, schools, workplace, community and world.
This mission is rooted in Baptism and renewed weekly by our
participation in the Sunday Eucharist.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Mother of Sorrows School Catholic Schools Week begins with Open
House on Sunday, January 29th 10:30 am – 2:00 pm. Teacher demonstrations
will run throughout open house and all are welcome to explore all that MOSS
has to offer. See the bulletin insert for additional information!
CONGRATULATIONS MAYA LOUTTIT
Maya Louttit, the daughter of Michael and Anita Louttit, will celebrate
her “Quinceanera” at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. This is the first time that we are
celebrating such an event at Mother of Sorrows. She has been preparing for this
event for the last several months and we congratulate her and pray for her as she
approaches this spiritual milestone in her life. A reception for Maya, her family
and guests will take place in the social hall following the Mass.
A brief explanation: The quinceañera is a traditional celebration of life
and gratitude to God on the occasion of the fifteenth birthday of a young
Hispanic woman. The ritual emphasizes her passage from childhood to
adulthood. The parents, in coming to the parish Church seeking the blessing, acknowledge that
their daughter has reached the age where she is capable of handling additional responsibility.
They see the quince años Mass as a way to thank God for the blessing of their daughter’s life and
to seek God’s blessing and guidance as she enters adulthood.
In the presence of family and friends, the young woman (the quinceañera), often
accompanied by her damas (young women who have played an important role in the
quinceañera’s life) enters the Church in procession, together with her escort and parents. Before
the final blessing, the quinceañera makes a commitment to God and the Blessed Virgin Mary to
live out the rest of her life according to the teachings of Christ and the Church. A special blessing
of the quinceañera concludes the Liturgy and the young woman is presented to the community.
The ritual continues with a dinner and sometimes a dance in her honor.
LENTEN FISH FRY
Mother of Sorrows School will conduct its annual school fundraiser, the
Lenten Fish Fries, again this year. The principal, Theresa Szmed, is working
with an expanded leadership committee to enhance this year’s menu and to
streamline the behind-the-scenes workload of cooking, serving, set up and tear
down. We are inviting additional volunteers from Mother of Sorrows Parish
to sign up for the various jobs. To follow through, please go to the Fish Fry Sign Up Link:
