You can do this in a number of ways, including sitting with them while they are using the internet and chatting with them about what they are doing. You can also keep track of what is going on by: • checking Bookmarks or Favorites (accessible via the icons on the menu bar) for sites your children like to visit often • checking recently visited sites (using Options, Preference or History) • email monitoring software is also available. KidSafe is an example of email monitoring software. It allows parents to filter email for their children to block out spam, viruses and offensive email. For more information go to the KidSafe website Establish guidelines about safe internet use • keep the computer that is connected to the internet in a family area, not behind closed doors • Only allow your children to use chat groups or news-groups or send email messages with your permission and under your supervision Teach children to be critical users of the internet • never to give others their name, the names of their friends, or fill in questionnaires with their personal details • never to send images of themselves over the net as they may be used for other purposes • to only use monitored chat lines designed for their own age group; • to always be themselves when on-line; • to be critical in respect of ‘information’ found on the internet. Information on the internet comes from many sources and not all is reliable IT NEWS Thinking of purchasing a computer or tablet for Christmas?? With the holiday season approaching, some people may be considering buying a computer/tablet as a gift for your child or for family use. After extensive research the school is trialling Ipads in three rooms this term, after which a decision will be made on the schools direction for the next three years. PHIL GREAVES PRINCIPAL CAR PARKING A reminder to parents to be mindful of congestion within the car parking and entrance areas at the front of the school. Parents are encouraged to utilise the ‘kiss and drop’ option and if it is necessary to park, there is car parking available in the church next to the school. Parking a short distance from the school and walking in is a healthy alternative and sets a good example to the students. Please be aware that parking in the music house area is for staff only. SUN SMART POLICY Now that the first signs of spring are creeping up on us, it is a reminder that all children must wear a hat for outside activities from now on. Please make sure your child’s hat is named so that it can easily be returned if it gets mislaid. Our “NO HAT NO PLAY” policy is now operational. WELCOME Welcome to the following new students and their families: Rec Bennett: Liliana F., Thomas A., Hunter F., Sabrina B., Angus B., and Lola C. Chalmer: Welcome back to Charlotte V Z. CATASTROPHIC (Code Red) Day Coromandel Valley PS along with all others in the area have been rated as high risk by the CFS and in times of a declared Catastrophic Day (Code Red) in the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Ban District the school will be closed. There will be no staff on site. At times the advice from the CFS may arrive after children have left. In the event that Coromandel Valley PS will be closed due to a Catastrophic Day families are responsible to check the weather forecasts or alternatively look on the Bureau of Meteorology or CFS websites for catastrophic rating for the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Ban District and listen to the ABC radio for updates. In regards to OSHC and Vac-Care the same action applies. If the advice is issued, then the facility is closed so please keep an eye on the public warnings for the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Ban District as staff will not be on site. Our Bushfire Action Plan and Checklist is completed and submitted to the Department of Education and Children’s' Services annually, and we conduct fire drills at our site on a regular basis. Our fire booster pumps and hydrants are also checked on an ongoing basis. The Bushfire information hotline number is 1300 362 361, and information is on radio AM891/5AN. The CFS website is www.cfs.sa.gov.au PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2013 Congratulations to Adam (2 Zuener) and Chloe (3 Cropley) who challenged themselves to read as many books as possible for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Please ensure you provide the school with correct personal contact details to ensure we can get in touch with you as soon as possible if the need arises. MURALS AT CVPS As mentioned in the last newsletter, CVPS has been given a grant of $1,500 to paint up to 5 murals around our school. We are looking for more parents (& kids) who would like to put ideas &/or help paint pictures around the school. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST....... anyone in the community can help. We originally thought of having murals to represent all the different cultures & nationalities connected with CVPS students; we have a wonderful diversity here worth celebrating...... maybe one with some European icons, one with Aboriginal/ Australian influence as well as Japanese / Korean / Chinese etc.... but maybe you have another idea for a mural theme???? Let us know. If you have connections with other cultures, please give us your ideas or let us know what you would like to see represented....or maybe you would just like to put a bit of paint on a wall ...remember, you don’t need to consider yourself artistic... just come and have fun.... Please contact Kristen at front desk on [email protected] or me (Sally Smith) on 041 22 33 051. We will be organising a meeting soon (with refreshments & a crèche if need be) at the school for those interested as we need to use the grant up by the end of the year. Plus there is funding available for translators if needed. We really look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. Sally PARENTS AND FRIENDS NEWS Welcome back to a new term. Thanks Chris Gully Shoe Boxes of Love For several years our school has organized the collection of Shoe boxes of Love to be sent overseas through The Samaritans Purse. Last year over 300,000 shoe boxes left Australia and New Zealand for children in South East Asia and the Pacific. We are very keen to continue this global support in 2013. But…this year we would like to collect differently. During the whole of W Weeeekk 22, we will take donations of items, empty shoe boxes and gold coins (to cover postage costs of $9 per box) into the front office. There will be a collection point for all items. At the end of the week, Mrs. Black / Mrs. Bradley’s class will pack all the donated items into shoeboxes and deliver them for shipping overseas. It would be aam maazziinngg if everyone could donate 1 item and a gold coin. If you have already packed a shoe box or would like to pack a shoe box of your own, there are pamphlets available at the front office, or visit the website listed below. PEDAL PRIX— PRIX—24 HOUR EVENT— EVENT—MURRAY BRIDGE From the moment the cover came off “BLUE BOLT” at the Murray Bridge 24hr Pedal Prix in September, our fantastic looking new vehicle attracted a lot of favourable comments and attention. All the cameras were clicking. This year we built a fibre glass body which gave us a more aerodynamic shape and we were also able to make it look spectacular. If there had been a prize for best looking vehicle, we think we would have won it. We knew it was fast, from our very brief training session in the nearly complete vehicle. In qualifying on the Friday night of the event we were the 7th fastest primary school out of 90 others and our riders were telling us that they would be able to go faster once they learnt the circuit. The race was a little bit rough, “BLUE BOLT” had a couple of rollovers and we got a few knocks and big hits and lost the chain a couple of times. The time we took to fix this problem cost us laps that we weren't able to make up. We finished 26 out of 90 in the primary class and 159 out of 225 competitors overall, and we rode a total of 259 laps in 24hrs. This means the team rode for 619.6 kms over the 24 hour event. We did set the fastest lap in the race at 3:17.687 on a circuit that is 2.2 kms long (the fastest lap time that Coro has ever done). This was achieved by Lachlan B. - fantastic effort Lachlan. There were some very tired riders and parents at the end of the race, but everyone has great memories that make all the training and hard work worthwhile. All the Team were presented with certificates at assembly on Monday. Lachlan was presented with a certificate for fastest lap and he then presented the trophy for fastest lap to Mr Greaves for the school to retain. A big thank you to all the parents, team, Carol and Alex Moncrieff, Terry Pulford, Bernie De Lyster and all our supporters and sponsors for their hard work and support. Without their support our Pedal Prix experience for 2013 would not have been the success it was.
