Vocations: Good Measure, Pressed Down, Shaken Together, and

SPIRIT AND TRUTH
“Vocations: Good Measure, Pressed Down, Shaken Together, and
Runneth Over” By Rev. Richard E. Barker
My dear parishioners, years ago our parish provided one priestly vocation to a religious
order, Reverend Father Brady Williams who joined SOLT, the Society of Our Lady of the
Blessed Trinity. For some time now, I've been praying for five more priestly vocations to
serve the Catholic faithful in our archdiocese. Additionally, I'm praying for two vocations to
religious life. It's not that I'm telling God what to do. But the number seven is an important
biblical sign of fullness and blessing. Therefore I'm praying for seven in the sense of seeking a
great harvest of workers from one little parish.
May our work with the poor, especially single mothers with children, merit the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for many new workers in God's vineyard. Thus everyone
will glorify God alone who provides seminarians and religious with ". . . good measure,
pressed down, shaken together, (and) running over" for the seminary in our archdiocese.
Moreover, I am praying for these vocations to emerge and take root during my lifetime. Therefore, my dear parishioners, if you want me to live a very long time possibly with
great sadness, don't pray for these vocations. However, if you want the local Church to enjoy a long life and be well served in future generations, beseech God now for these seven new vocations! And do not stop! As for future regret, I will have none. God
will grant me the joy of hope realized!
Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Your pastor, Reverend Richard Barker.
Lenten Reflection
By Thomas a Kempis
On the sale of Jesus by Judas
Lord Jesus Christ, Supreme Goodness and Eternal Majesty, I
bless and thank you for being unjustly sold by your own disciple
for so ignoble and meager a price as thirty pieces of silver.
I praise and glorify you for your patient sufferance of that
disloyal disciple, for though you foresaw that he was hastening
to betray you, nevertheless, you did not manifest any anger toward him, nor did you speak any harsh words to him. You did
not make his evil intentions known to others, nor after so villainous a deed did you remove him from his office or refuse him
Holy Communion.
How great is your patience, most gentle Jesus, and how
great my impatience!
Alas! How poorly I tolerate a brother when he has said or
done something against me. But you, for so long a time and
without complaint, have endured your disciple Judas, who would
soon sell and betray you, while I, for a …(continued on page 5)
Would He Die for One?
IF ALL humanity was perfect except fifty sinners who
stood in need of God's grace, would Jesus Christ our Saviour undergo the same passion and death as he did 2,000
years ago for the sake of the entire world? By all means,
for the Lord himself commanded, "Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." [Jn 6:12] Suppose only thirty sinners were in need of salvation, would
Christ Jesus offer his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity for so
few people? Plainly, for the "Son of man came to seek and
to save the lost". [Lk 19:10]
IF THERE were but ten persons whose sins condemned them, would Christ go to the cross to save them?
There is no doubt, because Christ said, "Today salvation
has come to this house." [Lk 19:9] If only one sinner were
to be found in humanity, would Jesus Christ die for him?
Most assuredly, Yes. "It is not the will of my Father who is
in heaven," says Jesus, "that one of these little ones should
perish." [Mt 18:14]

Confirmation Class Updates
Serra Club - For Vocations
As we near the culmination of the Confirmation faith journey we are learning about
the four outward signs of Confirmation.
Cardinal DiNardo will perform the sacred
rituals for each of the Confirmandi during
the Confirmation Mass.
Have you ever wondered if God might be calling you to help
preserve his Church? Have you ever had a nudge or a
thought that you would like to help foster vocations to the
priesthood or to support priests in their sacred ministry?
The Church is desperately in need of men and women to
answer God’s call to be holy priests and religious. Serra Club
was founded for this purpose of encouraging, promoting
and supporting such vocations.
The first outward sign is anointing with oil.
Using the Chrism (oil) in the sign of the cross on the forehead reaffirms the Confirmandi’s baptismal promise. It is a
strengthening of the original bond between the Confirmandi
and the church.
A new chapter of Serra Club is being formed in our area;
Serra Club Northeast of Houston. An informational meeting
will be held April 5, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at The Barrington
Kingwood, 2700 N. Cotsworld Manor Dr., Kingwood. For
more information and to RSVP please call Ted at
281-359-4594.
The second is the laying on of hands. Cardinal DiNardo will
hold his hands above the Confirmandi’s head and pray for
them. The third sign is said at this time “Be sealed with the
gifts of the Holy Spirit.” The Confirmandi answers “Amen”
as the fourth sign sealing the promise of the Sacrament.
40 Days for Life
This Lent, come stand and pray with your fellow parishioners for an end to abortion on the sidewalk in front of the
Planned Parenthood center, 4600 Gulf Freeway in Houston
on Friday, March 28, 2014. We
have been challenged to sign up at
least two people per hour from
6:30AM - 6:30PM on March 28th.
Will you be one of heroic these
prayer warriors? Your presence in
prayer could literally save lives.
The effects of Confirmation are lifelong and far-reaching. As
we recognize our newest fully initiated members of the
Church, we celebrate their faith and their acceptance of the
Holy Spirit into their hearts.
Jesus performed the first “Confirmation” with the Apostles
50 days after His resurrection at the feast of Pentecost. He
brought the Holy Spirit to them in the form of tongues of
fire, giving them the ability to speak in many different languages to spread His word. We ask our Confirmed to be
disciples of Jesus and spread the good news just as Jesus
commissioned the Apostles.

St. Vincent de Paul Reflections
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “Give something for the poor.” Wherever you live
in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance
of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell.
They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.

This hunger seeks fulfillment in the transitory

A Message from Father Barker
Baptism Classes
When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ
that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic
Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, have been catechized
(taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of
faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are
in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of reconciliation. If you are not Roman Catholic or are in need of the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, we ask that you refrain from
receiving Holy Communion in the Mass. However, you may go
up to one of the ministers for a blessing when Holy Communion is being offered. By crossing your hands over your heart,
the Priest or Eucharistic minister will know to give you the
blessing.
We will be offering baptismal instruction here at the
parish for those parents
wanting to baptize their
children. The instruction is
for both parents and godparents and is open to families who have been registered in the parish for at least 6
months. Parents and godparents who have received baptismal instruction in the last 3 years are exempt.
The classes will be offered quarterly, on the 1st and
2nd Sundays of March, June, September and December,
between the Sunday Masses. Ideally, classes are set up to
instruct several couples at a time to promote fellowship and
community. All persons must attend both classes to receive
credit. Interested parents must sign up and register through
the parish office prior to the classes. Only those who are
preregistered may attend the classes.
Also, if you choose to receive only the
Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice,
it is fitting nevertheless to pause for a moment to honor Christ’s presence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of
devotion. We would not think to pass a
friend on the street without some acknowledgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no
less, and most assuredly, a great deal more.
The classes will cover all aspects of baptism including its
history and presence in Scripture. But most of all, it will emphasize the importance of entering into the family of God
and its relevance to our eternal lives. They will
be fun, informative and interactive. I look forward to working with you in the coming year and sharing in this most
blessed event in your children's lives.
Receiving Holy Communion
When receiving the Blessed Sacrament in the hand—Stand
still. Extend forward one hand palm up and wide open with
your other hand underneath it. (Your hands should be in
front of your heart.) Then take your free hand to grasp the
Sacred Host respectfully and place it on your tongue in front
of the Eucharistic Minister. (Popping the Sacred Host onehanded into your mouth like popcorn is crude and highly inappropriate. Receive Holy Communion on the tongue instead.)
In the Heart of Jesus and Mary,
Deacon John
Please pray for our fellow parishioners and loved ones as
they face illness and recuperation:

Slayton Smith, Chelsey Price, Joseph A. Garcia,

Preston Fann, Rosie Collette
Never reach out to “take” the Blessed Sacrament from any
minister. “Taking” the Sacred Host from the minister’s hand
is never appropriate. Allow the Extraordinary Minister to
minister to you properly. Your response is to “receive” Holy
Communion, showing utmost respect in your posture and
actions.
When receiving the Blessed Sacrament on the tongue—
Stand still. Allow the edge of your tongue to rest on top of
your bottom lip. The Eucharistic Minister will place the Sacred Host on your tongue respectfully. Stand still. Don’t duck,
lunge or try to bite the Blessed Sacrament.
When receiving the Precious Blood from the chalice—Please
don’t wear heavy lipstick. Leaving a heavy cosmetic residue
on the chalice is highly inconsiderate of the sensitivities and
health of others who must share the same sacred vessel. The
white linen purificators used by our Eucharistic Ministers are
expensive, and our Women’s Guild spends hours and hours
trying to clean them. We are throwing away too many.
