ELLENIS DAY SPA The Environmentally Friendly Day Spa (SUSTAINABLE SPA) Ellenis Day Spa in the Central Victorian town of Kyneton is well known for using all natural Australian products. However, hen work started on the Spa’s expansion two huge bee hives were discovered within the walls of an old shed and Spa owner, Irene Thompson decided that given the declining numbers of honey bees in Victoria that relocating the hives was the only solution. “We’re expanding the Spa with a shady pedicure deck, mineral pool and luxury garden, so in keeping with our sustainability policy it was important that the bees were not destroyed in the demolition of the old sheds” Irene said. Kyneton bee keeper and specialist farmer, Claire Moore responded to Irene’s call for help and organised the relocation which involved the careful cutting of the honeycombs from the walls into ‘bee boxes’ “Claire and her ‘farming folk’ team removed the bees over four days taking them to their property on the outskirts of Kyneton where they are now breeding and producing high quality natural honey” “We have also sponsored another hive on their farm and we’ll be using some of the honey provided in our natural vichy body scrubs” Irene said. The ‘vichy’ treatment takes place in the Spa’s wet room where the guest lays down on the ‘vichy’ table while dozens of warm water cascades gently massage the whole body. A natural soft body scrub made from the natural honey is applied and softly brushed by the Clinician before a final water cascade rinse and moisturising massage. “All of our treatments exclusively use all-natural Australian products and the Spa is totally micro bead-free” she said. “As part of our quality control we recently inspected the relocated bees and even tasted the honey which was pure and absolutely delicious” Irene said.
