Who needs a Learner Permit?
Getting your learner permit is essential if you want to get your Probationary and
then full driving licence. Only those with an approved overseas licence (not
expired, and in English) may not be required to get a Learner Permit.

How do I get my Learner Permit?
In order to get your Learner Permit, you must pass the Learner Permit
Knowledge test. The Learner Permit Knowledge test comprises 32 questions
and you must get at least 78% out of 100% to pass.

Is the learner permit knowledge test available in my language?
The car learner permit knowledge test can be conducted in any of the
following 14 languages (screen text and audio assistance):

Can I drive by myself on a Learner Permit?
NO, a car learner permit only allows you to drive a car on the road with
an experienced driver while you are learning to drive.

Do I need to do 120 hours of supervised driving on my Learner Permit?
If you are under the age of 21 and you would like to go for your Probationary
Licence, you must complete 120 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours
at night). You are also required to document the 120 hours of supervised driving
in your Log Book.

If you are over 21 years old you do not need to complete the 120 hours of
supervised driving.
What if I have an overseas driving Licence?
If you are in Victoria on a temporary visa (such as a Bridging Visa), you can drive
on your overseas driver licence for as long as it is current providing it is in
English or accompanied by an English translation or International Driving Permit.
There is no requirement to get a Victorian driver licence.
If you hold an overseas driving licence and hold a permanent visa you will not
be required to get your Learner Permits and can drive on your overseas licence
for six months from the time you got your permanent visa. Depending on how
long you have held your overseas licence since your 18th birthday, you can either
get a Full Victorian Licence or a Probationary Licence. Your overseas licence
must be translated into English at your own cost.

What is Probationary Driver Licence (P plate)?
A probationary Driver Licence allows you to drive solo on the road. However,
there are certain restrictions. Also there are two types of Probationary Licences:
a P1 or Red P and a P2 or Green P.
A P1 Licence is the first Probationary Licence after your Learner Permit and a P2
Licence is the second Probationary Licence.

When can I get my Probationary Licence?
There are different rules for when you are able to go for your Probationary
Licence depending on your age and if you have been granted exemption from
the Learner Permit Minimum Holding Period.

How much does it cost to get a Probationary Licence?
There are costs involved in obtaining your Probationary licence such as fees for:

Hazard Perception Test
Practical Drive Test
Driver licence card – 3 years (if you are placed on a P2 Probationary
licence) otherwise you will be issued with a 4 year probationary licence.

How do I get my Probationary Licence?
You must be at least 18 years of age and a Victorian resident to be eligible to
apply for a probationary licence. You will need to pass a:


Hazard Perception Test and
Drive Test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Can I access interpreter or translator services?
VicRoads currently uses the interpreting services of Victorian Interpreter and
Translating Services (VITS) to assist in licence or learner permit tests.
However, there are limitations to the use of interpreters.

What is a P1 and what is a P2 Probationary licence?
There are two types of Probationary Licences – P1 and P2.
P1 is the first Probationary Licence that is obtained and it changes over to a P2
after a minimum period of 12 months. There are further restrictions depending on
your type of Probationary Licence.

When will I be able to get my Full Licence?
The minimum age to get your Full Licence in Victoria is 22. However, there are
also other prerequisites such as:


Must have held a Victorian P2 licence for a minimum of 3 years
Must have adhered to the restrictions that apply to P2 licence holders

There are no costs involved in getting your full licence in Victoria. If you meet the
prerequisites, your P2 licence will automatically move over to a Full Licence.

What does having a Full Licence mean?
Now that you are a little more experienced, you no longer have to adhere to the
special rules that apply to provisional drivers, but you do need to abide by
