Better for Business is a partnership of government agencies working to make it easier for business customers to deal with government. One way Better for Business is working to reduce costs and improve services is by accelerating the development of joined-up products and services for business customers. The accelerator process is used globally by private sector entrepreneurs to rapidly develop, design and prototype ideas from concept to a ‘Minimum Viable Product’ (MVP) stage, where a proposed solution is ready for further investment. Five teams of private & public sector experts This approach is an evolution in the way government sources and procures solutions to problems: 12 week intensive design and prototyping making it easier for entrepreneurs, software developers and start-up specialists to co-design and create solutions with government providing an alternative way for government to procure private sector services giving private and public sector investors an opportunity to invest in delivering solutions that have both a public and private sector benefit. Demo-day pitch of MVPs to public and private sector investors Page 1 Case study: CaseAccelerator study name Fact sheet: Result9 How the accelerator works Projects in the Result9 Accelerator During the 12-week Result9 Accelerator process each team will: turn project opportunities into innovative and impactful solutions create a “Minimum Viable Product” (MVP) for each solution test and validate these MVPs, and pitch the solutions as fundable projects to a public/private sector Investment Panel on the last day of the programme. Demo-Day At the end of the 12 week process each team will pitch their prototype product or service to a panel of private and public sector investors at an event called Demo-Day. Panel members (which will include private sector partners and / or government agencies) identify which MVP concepts to take to due diligence as part of the investment process. All parties to a concept will have the opportunity to share in the benefits of successful products. Reducing the barriers to participating in government procurement processes. Simplifying licensing, permits and certification processes. Market profiling enabling a way for businesses to access existing government information like survey data through a single point of access. Extending the functionality of online compliance tools for business, including proactive notifications. Developing a marketplace to better enable the development of government Application Programming Interfaces. Public – private sector teams Teams in the R9 Accelerator consist of 3 - 4 members of which at least one is an entrepreneur. The entrepreneur’s role is to guide the team through the market validation process, provide insights and guidance on product development and marketing and, potentially lead the team through the development of the MVP and pitching process. The remaining team members are subject matter experts from government agencies likely to be involved in delivering the solutions. They include people from Statistics NZ, the Ministry of Primary Industries, Education New Zealand, Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment.
