The state-of-the-art residence has a privileged location that allows for easy access to the city center, as well as offering open spaces and some calm after a busy day. Students are housed in double rooms, all of which have air-conditioning, a private bathroom and a television. The Summerfuel Barcelona curriculum is specifically tailored for Summerfuel students and taught in its entirety by faculty from ESADE, one of Europe’s top private universities. The program has been adapted from the university’s undergraduate offerings to offer high school students the unique opportunity to improve Spanish skills and experience cultural immersion that goes beyond the limits of tourism. Student Life and Dining Residència Universitària Sarrià has 24-hour front-desk supervision, and you will have full access to the residence’s computer room, student lounge, fifty-seat mini-cinema, laundry facilities, as well as a stunning rooftop pool with a panoramic view of Barcelona. SPANISH LANGUAGE IMMERSION AFTERNOON SEMINARS Spanish (3 levels) Cultural Electives Students take two and a half hours of Spanish language courses Monday – Thursday mornings. Fridays are reserved for city-based visits and cultural excursions. Students are placed into different Spanish levels by ability, based on an online test administered prior to the program. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required to attend Summerfuel in Barcelona, and beginners are exempt from the placement test. Morning Spanish language classes are supplemented by afternoon cultural electives that meet two afternoons per week and are designed to give students a deeper insight into Spanish history and culture. Classes are field-based when possible, ensuring enhanced exposure, immersion and intimate familiarity with Barcelona. Coursework is dynamic and discussion based, while homework is limited to ensure that students are able to make the most of their time abroad. Our teaching method is founded on active, experiential learning in a non-traditional educational environment. Our Spanish language course is designed to be both educational and fun, emphasizing student interaction over rote memorization. This hands-on course meets four days a week for two and a half hours totaling thirty hours of class work, comprising grammar, comprehension and oral study. Spanish study is project-based to make it as fun and dynamic as possible. Students will complete a short film, magazine or journal. Sagrada Familia Parc Güell Museo Picasso This incredible church, designed by Antoni Gaudí in the late 1800s and still under construction today, is Barcelona’s most famous tourist destination. The city’s most famous park, Parc Güell, offers great views of the city and sea, awe-inspiring architecture, and the world’s longest bench. Experience some of the Spanish artist’s most important works in this imposing museum in El Born. Camp Nou Las Ramblas Europe’s largest soccer stadium is home to what is widely considered the world’s greatest soccer team, FC Barcelona. The heart of the old city, Las Ramblas, has it all – shopping, dining, and some of Europe’s best people-watching. This former bullfighting ring is now a mall with rooftop restaurants offering a remarkable view of Plaça d’Espanya and the rest of the city. Museo de la Xocolata Barri Gotic Tibidabo Barcelona’s Chocolate Museum has sculptures made out of chocolate, as well as workshops that offer samples of different types and blends. The Gothic Quarter is full of narrow, winding streets and little boutiques, as well as the city’s main Cathedral and government buildings. Overlooking the entire city, this classical amusement park offers unforgettable views, and a good time for all. La Pedrera El Born On Barcelona’s main shopping boulevard stands this incredible and exotic apartment building, also designed by Gaudí.
