I hope that your Lent has been fruitful so that you can enter into the full emotion of these days: the long awaited Messiah, the one whom the prophets foretold, is accused falsely, rejected by the ones he came to save, and cruelly executed. The worst evil of all history was committed this week—we killed God by our sins! And yet, this great act of ingratitude and cruelty which literally pierces the sacred heart of Jesus becomes the font of mercy which brings salvation to the world. O tremendous love! O unfathomable Divine Mercy! We reject you, and you return forgiveness to us. What heart would be unmoved by such generosity? What kind of God is this who pardons his enemies and prays for them even from the cross? Let us not leave his love unanswered this week. Let us not ignore him as if he were one option among many. May we all respond with love for Love, as the response in the stations of the cross say: “I love you Jesus, my love, with my whole heart. I am sorry for ever having offended you. Never permit me to offend you again. Grant that I may love you always, and then do with me as you will.” I hope that you will join us for the Holy Triduum services this week: Holy Thursday and Good Friday at 6:30pm, and Easter Vigil at 8:30pm. They will be bi-lingual services, but this will be the first year where we will be trying out simultaneous translation! We will alternate languages for the readings (since we have bi-lingual misallettes), but the passion reading and homily will be translated live from English into Spanish using the Interactio app. This will allow both English and Spanish speakers to be in the Church together and listen in their own language at the same time! For those who speak only Spanish, please download the Interactio app before Holy Thursday and don’t forget to bring earbuds! (We will have a few available for those who forget) It is my hope that this technology will help us precisely at these big celebrations so that everyone can have a smooth experience of the mass and feel united as one community of faith. Ultimately, Lent has been preparing us for these days. I encourage you to take extra time for quiet and prayer. If you watch television or use other devices for video please use them to watch movies on the Lord’s passion (like the Passion of the Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, Risen, etc.) Our fasting and prayer create a longing in our hearts for the feast of Easter, when we can truly rejoice in the Lord’s triumph over sin and death. This is ultimately a type of our whole lives, which are often full of suffering, and lead us to long for the eternal joy of heaven where sin and death will be no more. May God be with all of us this week as we go to Calvary with our Lord. Blessings, Fr. Mark POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR APRIL Universal : Youth, That young people may respond generously to their vocations and seriously consider offering themselves to God in the priesthood or consecrated life. Matt Cato, Director of the Office of Life, Justice & Peace for the Archdiocese of Portland is asking St. Alice parishioners to contact our state representatives, Sen. Lee Beyer and Rep. John Lively, regarding HB 2004 (tenant protections – just cause and rent stabilization). He suggests the following messages: We need the Legislature to act to protect the 4 in 10 Oregonians who rent their homes. Renters are as little as 30 days away from losing their homes for no reason. This instability impacts everyone: our children, workers, and communities. Being a landlord and providing someone with a home is a serious responsibility. Tenants need and deserve basic protections. Please support HB 2004 to protect tenants. Please go to StableHomesOR.org for more information. Here is how you can find your Legislators: https:// www.oregonlegislature.gov/FindYourLegislator/legdistricts.html. Picnic Supper: Pray, Eat, Share!
