Mathematics Pacing Resource Document
5.NS.3
Standard: 5.NS.3: Recognize the relationship that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in
the place to its right, and inversely, a digit in one place represents 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Teacher Background Information:
The student will:
*Recognize the names of place values and periods
*Understand where the commas go to differentiate between the periods from thousandths to billions
*Read, write, compare, and order very large numbers
*Represent numbers in different ways

Students have not mastered this standard by simply showing that they can name each place from millions to thousandths. The basis of this standard is in
the relationship between each consecutive place and the effect that relationship has on how we can manipulate the size of a given number using
computation.

1) Explain the relationship between the two 5's in the number 455,721. [Howard County Public Schools, Maryland] Sample Answer: The five on the left is worth
50,000 since it is in the ten thousands place and the 5 on the right is worth 5,000 since it is in the one thousands place. The five on the left is ten times bigger
than the 5 on the right.
2) At the grocery store, 2 pounds of turkey costs $21.64. How much would 20 pounds of turkey cost? [Howard County Public Schools, Maryland] Answer:
$216.40 (That’s an expensive turkey!)
3) [Howard County Public Schools, Maryland] Answer: a) 10 b) 4 c) 400 A base ten block picture could be drawn to prove the answer for example b.
a.) Write the number that is 10 times smaller than 100. ___________________
b.) Write the number that is 10 times smaller than 40. ___________________
