Emergent and struggling readers as well as ELLs will enjoy this fast-paced,
fun card game to practice identifying initial consonant sounds. This quick
game is designed for 100% active student engagement in literacy centers,
free time, intervention, and small groups, an improvement to the whole-class

• Eight labeled, color-coded games (12 cards in each), at two levels
of play are included.
Level 1 (red) has four games, each with four beginning sounds, presented
in this developmental sequence:
b, m, r, s: These sounds are easily contrasted and elongated.
t, g, n, p: These sounds have more difficult contrasts with similar places
of articulation.
c, h, f, d and l, k, j, v: These sounds are less frequent.
Within each game in Level 1, the consonant sounds are presented in order:
3 b’s, 3 m’s, 3 r’s, and 3 s’s. Only single-syllable words are included in
Level 1 games.
Level 2 (purple) also has four games using the same letters as Level 1,
but within each game, the beginning consonant sounds are presented
in random order. Some two-syllable words are included in Level 2 games.
