we can continue to provide our students with awesome opportunities for
learning.

Cold and flu season is upon us. Just a reminder: Please call the school when
you are keeping your child home for illnesses, such as: vomiting, diarrhea and

Restorative Justice @ Jefferson Middle School
This quarter we will be starting our Restorative Justice Circle Keeper class with 6 th and 7th graders who
have been invited for their leadership and problem solving potential. This is an amazing opportunity.
Circle Keepers promote the values of Restorative Justice (RJ) by supporting students who are struggling
in school, finding alternatives to punitive discipline methods and developing a culture of community,
peace, belonging, and justice in their school community. During RJ Class, students will increase their capacity for empathy, build circle facilitation skills and get the chance to have conversations about different
issues related to Restorative Justice, like the school-to-prison pipeline, racial justice, youth grassroots
movements and more.
RJ encompasses a philosophy that counters a punitive/retributive model of discipline and seeks to:
 Repair the harm. Within a circle, participants reflect upon how they were impacted and how their
behaviors/actions impacted others. There is also discussion and collaboration around how and when the
offender will repair the harm. As opposed to exclusionary practices, the consequence is meaningful to all
parties and aims to repair the harm done.
 Prevent the incident from occurring again. The circle process aims to uncover the underlying motive/
cause of the behavior, and have the parties brainstorm alternative, pro-social behaviors.
 Build empathy. The circle process provide a safe community space for all parties to be vulnerable and
talk about how they were/are impacted by a behavior/incident.
The YWCA uses a peer-led model and the circle may look differently, based on the purpose of the circle.
Generally speaking, Tier II and III circles involve:
 Circle facilitators/student circle keepers (typically 2)
 All parties directly impacted (i.e., the “offender” and the “victim”)
 Allies of the parties impacted
 Members of the (school) community
More specific, intense (i.e., Tier III) circles may also include parents
The class will be completed in two seminars lasting about 4 hours each. These students will be missing
class, but all work will be made up. Food and beverages will be provided for all students participating.
Permission slips have been handed out and need to be returned in order for the student to participate.
The Jefferson Community is EXCITED!!!!
